First, I'd like to comment on XPS support. I called Dell tech support and talked to an Indian woman. After she pulled up my XPS 2, she transferred me to XPS support, which was an American man who was very helpful. He actually searched notebookforums and brought up the pictures I posted of my screen, and then talked to his managers. I called Tuesday and he said I should get my replacement Saturday. I can't ask for better service than that.
Now, as for deciding between the XPS Gen 2 and i9300. I wanted to spend about 2700 on a laptop, before tax and shipping. So, I configured the XPS Gen 2 I wanted through my EPP link, and spent 2700 (rounded up) on it. That got me everything I wanted, and it was at a fair price for me. I wanted the fastest possible laptop, because I also wanted to upgrade to a laptop, not downgrade...and coming from a desktop with a 6800 non-ultra, I knew that the XPS Gen 2 was the only way to really get more performance.
So my advice is to pick a price and configure the best laptop possible for that price.
In case you care, my XPS 2 has a 2ghz P-M, 1Gb ram, 60GB 7200rpm, cd/dvd combo, XP Pro, wireless a/b/g, 3 year at-home + complete care.
