R50P motherboard problem, replace or buy new one?

My beloved R50P with only one year of ownership died last week. It wouldn't even turn on, after so much autopsy it was determined that it was the motherboard.

Now I look around for that board to see how much it goes for, and to my heart attack it goes around 900 bucks!!!!! Man, should I go ahead and get it and try to replace it or just buy a new lappie?

There's definetly no way I am sending it to IBM to get triple charged. Have any you guys have a problem with your lappies and its motherboards? hAVE anybody replaced it themselves?

Have you called IBM tech support? I am pretty sure the warranty will cover the repair or replacement of the motherboard. I also have R50P for over a year now, it works perfectly. I had A21P a few years ago. Its motherboard died and IBM replaced the motherboard under the warranty.

tough luck...anyway, i suggest that you get a new lappy just save up more on the 900 bucks and you have a pretty decent unit. you can always use the RAM of the debunked unit to upgrade the new unit and use an external usb exclosure to house the hard drive. if you get an IBM still, you can swap out the optical drives. and other servicable parts, you can sell in any auction site

I suggest the same too. I would definately get a new one.

Btw, what is your model number? I thought all model with P at the end such as R50P and T43P come with 3 year warranty.

Still got the warranty!!!

Hey Sitti,

You are right I still got the warranty!!! It showed the wrong date but I checked my documentation and it does says 3 years. But I still got an obstacle, I am not currently in the US.

Should I try to send it to the US to get it serviced? Or should I switch the warranty to my local place (Panama)? And whichever I do, can I send it without the Hard Drive or do I have to send with it?

thanks,

I am glad you discover that you still have warranty. The price we paid for R50P is not just for the laptop. We also paid for their 3 years of international warranty and services.

I don't know whether IBM have service center in Panama or not. You can find the phone number of IBM service center in around the world in your manual. You don't have to send it all the way to the U.S. If there is no service center in your country, just call the service center in the nearest country. This way, you will get your laptop back much faster than sending to the U.S.

I don't know about the hard drive. You have to ask them before sending thel laptop. But I guess you have to send with your laptop, becuase IBM would want to run complete test after repair.
