Omega Drivers are really good actually. Sad though, the person in charge of it have been busy so he hasn't keep up with the revision of nVidia Forceware. His latest version is at least 3 or 4 version behind the latest out there.

The best I've seen for nVidia drivers outside from nVidia is Xtreme G.

They seems to keep up to date with it as close as possible. You could find discussion about them on forums.guru3d.com

I just got my Z71V today, and im looking into updating my video drivers. I understand the whole deal with the .inf files. Im just wondering, should I uninstall my current video drivers (71.13) before attempting to install the latest driver?

I guess i just dont like the idea of uninstalling a videa driver then rebooting my machine. I was always under the impression that in order for any hardware to work you always needed a driver installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could uninstall or install over, both will work. The cleanest method is ofcourse uninstall.

After you uninstall and reboot your machine, windoes will do autodetect and ask you for location of the INF. You point it at that point to install the new one
post #151 of 172
Thanks for the help SMP, however once I figured it all out and finished installing and rebooted the machine, I checked the driver version, and it said 76.44??

What happened to the 77.72? I downloaded the driver right from the nvidia website and im sure its the 77.72, so how did i end up with 76.44?

My best guess is that i accidently downloaded the wrong inf file. Ive been having trouble with the laptopvideo2go website, so i downloaded the file from some other website.

Actually, it might be you didn't do a clean uninstall.

You could mix and match the INF file and it will install correctly. I've done it before where I've use an inf from 77.30 to install 77.72 and it worked fine.
hmm, ok so let me make sure i have this straight before i try again.

1) extract the nvidia files to a directory, in this case C:\NVIDIA\Win2kXP\77.72 and replace the .inf with the new modded .inf file.
2) Uninstall the last NVIDIA driver and reboot the machine.
3) When windows prompts me for the .inf file, i direct it to C:\NVIDIA\Win2kXP\77.72, where i continue the installation.

Im just not sure which point in your installation instructions ill be at that point...
Sorry for the dumb questions, just worried about F*&king up my brand new laptop, hehe

Thanks for all the help thus far

Yup, that is correct....

Do exactly that..

To uninstall go to control panel, system, display adapater, adapter..click on uninstall drivers...

I updated to 80.44 and while the visual performance was good, I still noticed alot of fan noise. The fan speed did slow down alot when i stopped playing however it was still spinning faster than it does right after start-up before i run any gpu taxing programs. I also noticed that the laptop did heat up noticably around the quicklaunch buttons above the F12 key.

This is my first laptop so the fan speed, noise and heat could be completely normal... still not sure though. Im wondering, would updating my bios and everything help the heat issue?
Thread Starter
No idea. I am using the 0208 which is the latest version. I know some people have a high pitch noise which the bios upgrade fixed.

But as the GPU fan, I am still trying to figure that out. I might go back to 77.30 and compare.

EDIT: I am testing out 77.70 and it seems to be pretty good. Fan still on though. It did resolved a few problem I saw in 80.40, one of which is incorrect clock speed detect.
I did some reading and found that the cpu runs hotter while on AC power, thus causing the fans to work a little harder.

So i tried running the half life 2 stress test on battery power and found that the fans will kick in fast during the graphic test, and once finished and out of the program, they will slow down considerably. So im guessing that the louder fan response is due to the laptop being on ac power instead of battery.

I was going to use the flash program that came with the laptop however, it warned me not to unless i had problems. My fans arent giving a high pitched noise so i left the bios alone for now.

There is a setting in the nvidia control panel that control this. WHen you are in battery mode, it will switch from full power down to battery mode. Which basically downclock your GPU to conserve battery.

But you are correct, if this is active when using on battery it is a perfect laptop heheh no heat, no fan, whatsoever LoL!!

I had no problem with my, but I just want the latest BIOS just for the heck of it. One sad part about Asus is they don't tell you want was fixed in each BIOS release. So I usually just flash it for the heck of it to see what changed.
Haha, no heat and no fan would be perfect. But, im more than sure at this point that i was just being paranoid. The fan speed and sound was probably completely in the normal range.

My friend brought his z71v over and we updated his drivers and played bf2. He was using his on his lap and when we were finished the laptop wasnt hot at all. Nor did the fan sound any different than mine did.

At this point im just going to consider my laptop is working correctly... I will start worrying wheni get blue screens and random restarts, lol.

Thanks for all the help Smile,
ill probably write a review in a few weeks, but thus far im more than happy with my z71v
