inside the acer travelmate 8104

in this thread...

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=74398

somebody requested pictures of the inside of the 8104. at work, we just bought one a couple of weeks ago to run some tests and analyze the innards. i tagged along for the disassembly and i took quite a few pictures. looking over them now, though, they're mostly not all that great. anyway, they ones that didn't completely suck are going up now as i type this. you can find them in this directory. 41 pictures. about 29mb.

http://www.auburn.edu/~alamysm/acer8104

they're all at native resolution (3.2mp) and untouched (except for some tinfoil-hat-paranoid black marks to cover up anything i thought might be an identifying number.. sorry if i went a little overboard).

it was been a week or so since we took it apart, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask. i'll try to answer. i remember reading a discussion on here a little while ago about whether or not the video in the 8100 series is upgradeable or not. i can tell you with 100% certainty that it is not. the processor, however, is socketed, and can be upgraded. you can see both of these for yourself in the pictures i'm uploading.

Finally someone dismisses with evidence the PCI-E myth (well so far a myth in the main)

It was assumed by most that video card is not upgradable. Such a thing would require a "bigger package"

Now to questions.
Unscrewing everything on the bottom is not enough to take laptop apart. How do you remove keyboard? I assume there are more screws under keyboard to separate laptop bottom part?

Thanks.

well, i didn't personally disassemble the acer, but i was there when it was done. i have the (reassembled) system right next to me now. there are at least two tabs along the top of the keyboard that you have to push back. i'm using a small flathead screwdriver. one is above the delete key and one is above the escape key. however, this does not completely release the keyboard, and i'm not sure what else is holding it in place. it looks like something is holding it down around the F5 key and possibly the F10 key.

anyway, yes, there is at least one screw under the keyboard that must be removed to disassemble the system.

Thanks for instructions. I'll manage the rest.
In the "sister thread" http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=74251 I've been musing a bit about chips I could figure from pictures. Gotta know more.

oh, heh, i didn't realize there was a thread like that one that i could/should have posted these in.

I can not get the images. Where can I find them?
It's because this thread is old.
then we cant do anything to see the pic?
The link's out, try PMing the poster who took it apart - I'm sure he has the pictures somewhere. I'm painting my Travelmate 8100 so I'd also be interested in these pictures again.
Why'd you decide to paint your 8100? I'd definitely be interested in seeing pics of that. Talk about unique.
For exactly that reason - to be unique.

Does anybody know the link to those inside pics? I downloaded some in this forum, but they were of a Dell's

Disassembly pics. I've uploaded them temporarily and will remove them soon. They do not belong to me but I downloaded them for reference when they were originally publically posted. I know nothing about them, know nothing about the internals, have no other sizes available. If my smugmug bandwidth use (for which I am paying) soars out of site, I will remove the pix even sooner than temporarily (a few weeks). Hope they are of assistance to someone in the meantime.

Thank you so much Mr.Vsyvc, this will be very useful for me. I have just gotten the invoice for the company who i selected to paint my computer...they said that they can mimick the Voodoo tatoo and color my laptop red...however this will cost about $525 american. What do you guys think? Is it worth it? For just red paint without the tatoo it would be around $400 - 450.
does having it painted professionally still void the warrenty? btw 400-450 is alot of money... personally id just paint it my self and save 350-400 dollars. from what ive heard its not hard to paint them, it just takes patience and some time
post #18 of 20
Painting it will void the warrenty for sure.

msg me if you guys like this idea , just a thought dont have time to try it my self ,but what if you got the ferrari's case and put the 8100 insides in to it from the pics i have see all the ports are in the same place as in my 8104 so if the case is the same then you could send your laptop in and ask them to change it for you or just get the case from acer them selvs
post #20 of 20
So far from what I've been told, you cannot buy a Ferrari case without getting the internals with it (for full price, obviously), which is similar to how the Ferrari body is. Try getting a Ferrari body to put over the internals on a Ford Probe, and you will be out of luck, unless you can afford one with the internals as well.

NOW, here is a thought... if someone with a Ferrari, and someone with an 8100 wanted to trade cases for a unique result, then that would be interesting to see!
