all you need is the network driver, then go to dell and dl the latest drivers.

make sure you have the network drivers or you are stuck with no way to get anything.

There are more recent drivers than are listed on Dell's site. The Intel Pro Wireless card for example has a driver on Intel's site that is slightly newer than Dell's. Intel also has a much newer INF for the Intel 915 chipset. Then there's the similar situation of the video drivers that you can grab from laptopvideo2go. I've heard of some issue in relation to the old drivers dell are using. Of course the quickset driver and the app that runs the multimedia buttons you have to get from Dell.

What is the best antivirus and firewall/network security programs
post #8 of 35
If you're talking freeware, you can't go far wrong with AVG and ZoneAlarm respectively.

Out of interest, did you guys in the US get Windows XP CDs with your machines for doing a full re-install with, or are you just using another XP disc and taking the product key off the bottom of the unit? Dell in the UK at least has stopped shipping media out with machines, although if you ask them for it they'll send you a set of discs.

adding to the software list:

DVDDecrypter, it can rip what DVDShrink can't.

Thanks Bert! I figured that, as long as I was making the list for myself, I might as well post it here.

I'd really appreciate it if folks would point out any glaring errors or omissions.

I'm pretty sure the 9300 is the same as the XPS2, 915PM. In the laptop section.

Does the 9300 have the same Ethernet LAN driver as the XPS2? This onehttp://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_XPS_GEN2&category=0&os=WW1&osl =en&deviceid=2967&devlib=5
It says on the link that the driver is for XPS2.

Awesom, thanks dude. Now I can be lazy once my XPS Gen 2 arrives. I plan to format it within minutes of its arrival. This should make it alot easier for me.
