Ratmyr's Biohazard EX7 (Hypersonic) Review

Greetings!

It has been a long wait, however, being in the field for the most of it helped out big time. There was also an extra 10 day delay due to the technician finding a flaw in the paint job and requesting it to get redone. As you will see with the pictures, the paint job is awesome. Seems darker than the that on my GX7, so I am completely happy.

The specs for the system are as follows:

Aviator EX7: 17" Desktop Replacement Laptop Featuring Intel Pentium 4
3.60GHz Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 560

3 Year 24/7 Toll-Free Tech Support Platinum Service & Lifetime Support
Paint (External) Mouse to match system
Paint (External) Keyboard to match system
All custom painted omniscient red metallic (to include external keyboard and mouse)

Just as I had done with the GX7, I want to review the entire process and my thoughts on the system. I will not be doing any benchies as I plan on gaming the hell out of it tonight and through the weekend. But I wanted to provide all of the other information to you. This thing has only been out of the box for about three hours.

One thing that I was surprised about - there are no markings identifying that this is a Hypersonic system. When I requested the custom paint, I told them that I did not want the logo on the back, as I felt it was a distractment from the looks of the system. I had received the custom text and since I am a large fan of the Biohazard symbol and use it mostly on my system, I requested they add the name Biohazard EX7 (shows the model of the system). That is the only markings on the system. Looks awesome!

Order Process
The order process went very well. Quick and easy. I ended up paying with credit card this time as opposed to the Paypal like I did last time. The result, faster transaction. I had been talking with one of the head salesman and was shifted to another sales person once my order was processed. Unlike the last time, this time, I had made a couple of changes during the process. I realized that since I was going to give SATA a shot, I might as well max both drives out at 80gb (prior to that I had 60/80). I also had to change the video card to ensure no problems (present or future) between the video card and the turbo wireless. Both sales persons were extremely helpful and even half-way through the process, an additional customer service rep began giving me updates and this just added to the experience. Also - I didn't use any of my contacts from the previous purchase, so now I have dealt with approximately six or seven different individuals. Great support.

Shipping
APO shipping is not my preferred method, however, I do not have a lot of choices. I was looking into overnight and next day, but with the costs of duty/import, it was not worth it. So I decided to go with the APO shipping. The shipment took approximately seven days (shipped last Friday and arrived today).

The system was well packed. Very heavy package, but very well packed. And, unlike other items I have received, very little marks on the box, which helped me feel better about it. Surrounding the laptop box (smaller box in the main gigantic box) was the air bags and keyboard. Once I opened the laptop box, I found that they had wrapped the system in a cloth case (very nice) and even placed cloth between the keyboard and screen. This was not done with the last system, so I was surprised and very happy.

One nice thing - no popcorn material. That is such a mess. I didn't have to worry about this much this time.

First Impression
This beast is heavy as hell. I expected it to be heavier, however, I was not expecting it to be as heavy as it was. Maybe it is because I have not been using the GX7 in awhile (cut a good deal for a friend).

The paint job was astonishing. I knew how much I liked the last paint job and wanted the same color this time. But I was even happier when I noticed that the paint was a bit darker. It looks awesome.

Display
Simply amazing. I had a lot of concern about the glare screen, but it really isn't that bad. There seems to be a color difference between what I have been using and this one, but I think it is because must of my screens are dull. But this was nice. And the resolution is comfortable. It amazes me that the smaller the resolution, I expect it to be hard to view, but it really isn't.

No dead pixels. I have searched this screen over and over and not a single problem. The most I have noticed is that when the screen is dark, I see a lighter portion of the screen towards the camera, in the middle for a patch and a bit on the bottom. This is not noticeable during normal usage, but if the screen goes black (powered black obviously), it is there. I think this is what people are calling leakage, but not sure about the middle deal.

Sound
It seems to be not as loud as the GX7. Not sure if I have all of the settings fine tuned yet. The sound is nice, but a bit low. Will try it out with speakers in the future. But I have moved my MP3s to it and will be playing games all weekend. Definitely looking forward to it.

Fans
The fans are running normal. I have a cooler on it, but it seems to be running normal. I haven't figured out how to kick them into turbo mode for some heavy gaming. But it is not an issue.

This was a good experience. Once again, Hypersonic has done an outstanding job with the system and provided great support. It was a long wait, but like I said, being in the field helped out greatly and I am glad that they did the fine-tuning of the paint job as it looks great. This was well worth the wait - even though, I won't lie - the waiting sucks!

I have included pictures to help you drool over the system! Once things have calmed down a bit and I am worn out (and stress-powered-down) I will post some more shots and benchies. Don't look for overclocking results as I don't normally do this. I am happy with the performance. Now off to buy some more memory.

Thanks!

Nice laptop

Very nice system pictures. I just received my Aviator EX7 with the Reflexxion Python Special Edition, but I don't have a digital camera at the present time to take the pictures. In any case, my config is in my signature.

The paint job is incredible on this machine, especially considering it is hand painted. I plan on posting my pics and short review once I finally get a nice, new digital camera.

My experience with HyperSonic was superb all the way from sales to customer service to tech support.

I had looked at that paint job and was interested, but since red is my favorite and i wasn't sure how a red python would look (man, that sounds cool - The Blood Python), I decided to go with this one.
Your system looks great. The red color looks very deep and rich in tone. The same goes for my system. The colors always arrive much deeper and richer than what the pictures usually portray.

I thought I had created this in the review area and just realized that it is in the photo area. If a moderator would like to move it, thank you.
Well, since you have such great photos, I don't think it is too out of place, but a lot of people may not look here if they are looking for reviews specifically.

Gives you something to look forward to. I know that is what I do with reading everyone elses reviews. Makes the prize just that much better.

One thing is - I need to get used to identifying where to get my drivers as I have always been an ATI person and now I am a Nvidia user. So I have to start bookmarking. Downloaded DH zero ??? drivers and installed them last night since my drivers were from December.
nvidia has a sweet setup to DL drivers. just goto thier site

Maybe I was looking in the wrong area. The drivers I downloaded from them ended up telling me that there was not a supported card installed. So I figured it was like the ATI mobility cards not being able to use ATI released cards.

I had to download powerstrip also - not for o/cing but rather to find out what my clock settings were. I was thinking something was fishy as the nVidia drivers were showing my clock settings as core 125mhz/mem 600mhz. When I was reading other reviews I was astonished as they were talking in the 1000s and here I was at 125mhz. I wasn't sure what the deal was. I ran powerstrip and it showed the settings as 330 and 1000. Just makes me so much more confused that I already was. Anyone know how I am supposed to determine the GPU settings?

Thanks.

Ratmyr,

I have been struck with GX7 heat issues, on the second RMA, so this time when I called up I asked for some type of compensation seeing the 1 year warrentee will soon expire. They offered me credit as long as I bought a computer over 2k.

So of course I jumped at the opportunity and traded it back and put a few bucks down on the EX7.

I am in the same boat as you and have never used a nvidia GPU in a laptop. Wondering if you have any video drivers you would recommend. I just went with the DDR2 version of the nvidia for now, I will upgrade it later, also what issues did you hear about that you decided not to go that route?

I just placed the order last night so can still alter it a bit and want to get your opinion.

Thanks man,
Plexmark

Sorry to hear about the problems you were having. That sucks big time. My older GX7 (got to see it last weekend) is still kicking butt and doing quite well. It is getting ready to PCS back to the US in a week with my friend.

As for the EX7, good to hear that they are going to work with you on the conversion. I am loving this system. It runs very smooth and quiet (mostly because I always ran the fans at maxed on the GX7).

As for the nvidia GPU, I have not had any problems with it at all. I went with the newer DDR3 because I didn't want to upgrade right away. I would have gone with the ATI (as mentioned above), however, because I didn't want to risk an issue with the wireless, I decided to take it easy. The drivers are I using are from driverheaven. They seem to be really good. I pulled a 3900 (or so) on 3dMarks05 and that is with no modifications at all. Interesting note - when Hypersonic did the test, it was 3780 - so the change of drivers made a little difference (actually a nice difference).

I was running Unreal Tournament 2k4 at maxed settings and it was awesome.

Did you op for the new version of the 3.6?

I went with the 3.2 that supports 64bit processing. They have it marked as w/EM64T.

I originally wasnt, then decided to go with it. Just wondering if this is a good or bad idea. I just didnt want MS releasing a new operating system and me having to upgrade. Then again I am not a fan of first generation microsoft stuff. But the chip has been out ofr 4 months and this is one of the lower processor speeds it is available in so we will see.

Also, for now I am going with the DDR2 on the Nvidia, strickly a price issue for right now. And the GX7 with the 9700 256 ran everythign I needed fine. So I this upgrade alone should keep me happy.

I just wanted to see if anyone has any technical reasons to get the DDR3, less heat....less issues...or is it just more speed.

Thanks again,
Plexmark

I will post a review of mine when I get it, although seems everyone else already has many of them, but I owe it to the community as I read everyone elses.

I didn't go with the 64bit for two reasons, the first was the added money and the second was the current support for the chipset. I don't see a lot of software capitalizing off the use of the processor for awhile now and even though Windows 64bit is right around the corner, the extra two hundred or so could be well utilized in other areas (I already pimped my PC - now its time for my ride). Plus, as far as I know, there is no difference between the non-64bit and the 64bit, which means it should be upgradeable when I want to go that route. I haven't looked into that, but when I am ready, I will be talking with them.

That aside, are you doing the APO deal this time as well? (not sure if you are still over here or not). Me. It was a bit faster, but I will be PCSing somewhere this August (still applying for jobs) and so my days of APO will be over with this summer. DEfinitely looking forward to being able to receive items overnight.

Good luck and let me know if you are looking for anything else.

Thanks.
Charles.

Any feedback you guys have will be appreciated.

I definitely understand your concern. My concern with being in Europe is the long delays with shipping. However, I don't have to worry about the import fees/taxations and I can imagine this continues to add to the concern for those outside of the US.

The reps were very good and they spend a lot of time paying attention to the details. If something doesn't look right - they go back to it (as in my paint job). I know there are some here in the forums who have had bad experiences, but my belief is that this is just the eaches and not the norm.

Be careful though - the accidental damage is only for those in the US. I was looking at this as well, but the fine print states:

"Availability:
This option is available for sale in the United States only. The ADP extended service plan must be purchased at the time of the system purchase."

You might want to keep this in mind.

Good luck and let me know if there is anything else you are interested in. I am sure you will love the system!

I am not sure what you do, but for me, USAA renters/homeowners insurance offers a electronic plan, full replacement value and you can do anything, just like your carpet, you spill something on it, homeowners will fix it. Although USAA they give one better for computers, first time use on a computer there is no deductible, but after you use it once, if you try for the next two years, there is a deductable, but mine is only 250.

Just an option for those, for me one year, 5k coverage for electronics accidental damage is 11 dollars a month. Well worth it, I treat it like a car, I want more then just collission.

Also, I personally have RMA'ed my GX7 twice, but hypersonic is good company, first time, I was on leave in states and got it done fast, this time, APO they are giving me money back to put towards a different model since I was worried about the warrentee running out and this one required a full motherboard upgrade.

Thanks,
Plexmark

Yeah. USAA is definitely the way to go.
