hey im looking into getting a powerbook or an ibook. im planning on doing all my schoolwork, and some video and sound editing on it. what do u think i should get? and what would be best for music editing??thanks

wither with more than 512mb of ram should be able to handle garageband with a few tracks well, providing your only editing the music and not recoding any the ibooks is ok. but the powerbooks has a better sound card and a line in-put making it a better choice (both machines have internal microphones).

for school work the ibook is a better choice seeing as the battery last far longer than the powerbook, but the powerbook being faster will make it a better machine for video and audio editing, you need to pick a good balance of features and something that is in your price range.

also i think i might be recording music so in that case should i go with the powerbook. If you have like a mini studio with a powerbook could you post pics?? or give some advice that would be awesome.

If you have the money, there is absolutely no reason to not go with the powerbook.

I would go for a 15" powerbook since Audio/Video editing would probably benifit a great deal from more screen real estate. Also try and have a ram upgrade in the budget. I work alot in Xcode and the standard iApps, but have only got 512mb ram. My powerbook will rack up 100,000 page ins within a hour or so of work, and it can definitely slow things down.

Also, since you said schoolwork, you can take advantage of the edu discount for the powerbook, which is twice as much ($200 vs. $50) as the edu discount for the ibook.

If you are looking at the 12" powerbooks, then wait to see what the new ibooks that come out this month have. If they get a 1.33ghz/fx5200 bump for better tiger compatibility, then go with that.

well i'd go with the 17 for all the reasons stated with the 15 + more screen + more battery life - by the time you juice a 15" to the specs of a 17 - it's a 200-300 $ difference.. the increased battery and screen are worth that to me.. and 6.7 lbs is NOT a lot for a computer to weight... compared to 5.6 it's a nothing difference...

imnot really into the 17in because it is really big, and pretty BIG, not heavy but big. also its more thatn my buget will allow.

The 17 inch PowerBook is actually smaller in some ways than a 15 inch PC laptop.

I compared mine to an Inspiron 8600 one day...only one dimension was larger than that of the 8600 and it was only by like half an inch or so.

i'd say the PBs are what you should be looking at, as others have noted. don't buy RAM from apple. use dealram or ramseeker to get 256-512MB modules, and newegg for a 1GB stick. others might have workable suggestions as well.

the faster HDs in the PBs will be beneficial for anything video or audio intensive. my iBook has handled anything i've thrown at it, but then again i did stick a 7200rpm drive in my system.

also, make sure to calculate how much an educational discount will cost w/ taxes included, vs. , for instance, a machine from amazon that u will get w/ a ~$150 rebate, free shipping, and possibly no taxes depending on where u live. the rebate deals can often beat out the apple edu discounts when u add it all up.

hope this helps.
