Virtual PC - Premiere Pro Performance?

I have a friend who is looking to take his Mac audio rig portable. He also has a PC video rig. I am thinking we could combine the two for him into one Powerbook G4 laptop utilizing virtual PC.

That way he could keep all his mac audio software and still have compatibility with me and my PC rig. (We share projects through USB drives and Premiere Pro projects. I do final polish to his rough edits.)

Question is, just how good is the performance of Virtual PC running something like Premiere Pro. Would I get the same realtime video editing performance I am getting with my PC?

And no - I am not moving to Final Cut Pro and buying a Mac.

virtual pc is software that is crippled by microsoft, premier will run very slow and be unusable under virtual pc, maybe slightly usable whit 2gb of ram in the powerbook and providing no other apps are running.

sidenote: there is a reason why adobe stopped making premier for mac, final cut to to good to compete with.

virtual pc is not crippled by microsoft, it has to create a hardware translation layer from risc to cisc. That is a BIG deal, as is the other way. Think of how slow pearpc is.. ouch.

They only just bough virtual pc.. connectix certainly got all the performance they could out of it.

anyway, i wouldn't even think of trying to use an audio app through it, if you could even get it to recognize the interface properly.

Thanks for the replys. I'm going to give it a shot at an Apple store, their prettty good about that type of thing. Thanks for the replys and setting expectations.

Premiere will be even worse than it already is to begin with. System hog, random freezes and crashes, and just a general pain to use. Then add in the VPC translation period and it won't be worth it.

If you must stay on a PC for video, at least give Vegas a shot.

i would argue that if you were going to learn a new thing.. skip vegas and learn final cut express. then you go mac native anyway, with a great program. Vegas is cool, but i prefer FCE

Yeah, I'd suggest FCE over Vegas if someone's not platform dependent. But if he wants to stick with a PC, Vegas is probably the most stable and versatile NLE in that market. Plus, the audio tools in it rock.

yeah, considering i use my pc for video, i use vegas and i like it alot. i recommend it for pc
