I had received an Alienware Area-51 5500 a few weeks ago, but it turned out to be a piece of junk - so I sent it back and ordered this machine. I hope I made the right decision. I decided to spend as much money on this machine as I had on the Alienware model - so I was able to max it out. If anyone has this model and has any information, I would like to hear it. Thanks!

I have been looking at this laptop as well. The only thing that deters me is the lack of a 256 version ATI X700. I like that it is a M version Pentium and only weighs 7.7lbs. When you get this bad boy please post a review. I'm very curious.

I also posted a thread in the Gaming section about this computer and my needs. Nice to see someone else inquiring about this machine.

I would have preferred the 256 version as well - but not a deal breaker for me. The weight was a large factor - I lug my machine around with me everyday. I figured it would still be great for web grapic design/development AND gaming. I guess I'll find out next week

I plan on posting a review - I hope others do the same. I'm curious if I went overboard. Money wasn't really an issue, but no one likes to hear that they paid too much for unnecessary upgrades.

I'm dying to see a review on this bad boy, especially since I have the M675 now and instead of upgrading to the M680, I went with the zd8000 CTO.

And you can NEVER go overboard. Underpowered, sure, but overboard? NEVER!!!!

m675 user

could you do me a big favor and snap a few pics of the heatsink, because i'm trying to get my m675 lappy up but need the heatsink so a picture might help in the modding proccess.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

I don't have time to write up a thorough review, but here is a quick synopsis:
First off, I'm really loving this machine! The 17" screen is very clear and ultra-bright. The 2.13 GHz processor is screaming fast - but I haven't been able to really bench it yet. I have 2G of RAM too, and this certainly helps the speed. The machine is very quiet - I'm sure this is due to having the latest Centrino M processor instead of a P4 - which also keeps it quite a bit cooler than a typical P4 model.

One great feature is the built-in wireless G network card. It has great range - I'm able to go anywhere in my home and yard and still keep connected - WHICH IS AWESOME!

I highly recommend and endorse this machine. Of course, I've only had this machine for a few days, but already it's leaps and bounds better than the experience I had with my Alienware purchase.

I will be using this machine for web application development and design - so I'll be pushing the limits of the machine in many ways. Once I get ALL of my software installed and checked out, I'll try to find time to post again. Oh, and as soon as I can play a couple games, I'll post the results as well.

OK, you're like the teaser for next week's episode with this post. Let's hope it's not the season finale. We'll be waiting to hear more....

I've got some pics from the Gateway site. Someone PM me and I'll send them to you so you can post them. Or you can just check out the Gateway site and save yourselves some time. The link is: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...400467tc.shtml

got a question why is their sometihng stking out of the end of the notebok. Is that the 12 cell batter?
Yep, that's the 12 cell battery. Poor design choice in my opinion, but, then again, they don't ask me.
Yeah, that didn't sit well with me when I was making my choice either. I didn't want to take a chance on possible damage as it was being transported around in my laptop bag.

idk i want to buy it but after i saw benchmarks i was liek Hellz no! 24 fps on doom 3 sucks the dell m70 get 60+ but then the gateway is so freakin sweet. IM just so confused. I dont knwo what to get if i had the money i would get both but the dell would drain my wallet dry becuase its so expensive but i i know the grpahics card will beat the crap out of the gateways!
Benchmarks are good and all, but they don't always reflect everyday usage.

I'm been using the hell out of this machine for a couple weeks now. It's fast, it's quiet, and the battery life is much better than I expected (8 cell because I didn't want the protrusion). I've owned many Dells and I'd have to say the Gateway is a better quality machine hands-down.

I've been so busy catching up on work that I haven't had time for gaming, but I did take the time to watch a DVD on it the other day. I was amazed at how great the picture was on the screen. The 17" screen just blows me away. The sound was a little lacking, but that's the only complaint I have thus far.

Now see, that's the kind of information that makes a difference (to ME at least) when I want to know about buying a notebook. Now, unfortunately, I went with the zd8000 CTO (custom to order), but I did have an M675 before. I was making a decision between the two, and HP just had better salespeople. Plus, the M680 was so new that no one had it in hand yet. I've been waiting for 3 months to see info on it, and I just took too many trips into Circuit City and CompUSA where I saw the zd8000 in some form of configuration and started drooling. I'm very happy with it though.

Please, keep me posted as I may recommend it to others based on what I read here.
