Semi-Official Non-Dell RAM for 6000 thread

Hi All,

Long time lurker, short time 6000d purchaser (actually still waiting for shipment).

I've been searching through a load of threads and forums, but it would be cool to have a single place to capture this vital info for people who want to upgrade the RAM in their 6000.

I just bought the 256Mb minimum and was looking at either a pair of 512s or a single stick of 1Gb.

A lot of people point to crucial.com and Kingston has an "official" dell 6000 module, but these are way more expensive than some alternatives that some people have been buying.

If you have bought "cheaper" ram and are actually using it in your 6000, please post your price and website details, I'm sure they would be appreciated by all!

Mr Picard, I noticed you bought some cheaper RAM, could you please tell us how that went?

Yeah i actually bought Kingston's "value ram" @ newegg. I have made tests via memtest86, zero errors and module passed. Dell diagnostics = all pass. No errors in my system since i used it. I'm still observing though. But all is well.

If it ever fails under normal use, I think Kingston will replace them for free under their Lifetime warranty.

can't wait to hear how they work for you.

Hi, I will be purchasing an Inspiron 6000, direct from Dell very soon, and I will be getting the minimum 256MB 1 Dimm. I plan to get 2 Dimms of 512MB RAM from Newegg, either Crucial, Corsair, or Kingston, but I'm stumped on the exact specs to search for RAM on Newegg. Can anyone help? What I do know is that it's PC3200, DDR2 SDRAM, but not sure of all the other specifics.

Where I'm confused is the following categories: Where it says "type", do I need 200-pin DDR SO-DIMM, or 200-pin DDR2 SO-DIMM? And then where it says "speed", do I need DDR400 (PC3200) or DDR2 400 (PC2 3200) ?? Also, will I be able to find a pair of 512MB sticks, or will I have to buy them separate, I know I've seen pairs, and it seemed that they were cheaper that way. Thanks in advance for your help, as I'm new to Laptops and RAM specifics.

My 6000D came with 1 X 256MB of 400MHz RAM. The first time I went to shut it down I got a "Can't write to memory module XXXXXX" error.

I purchased 2 X 512MB Corsair "Value Select" from ZipZoomFly. It is 533MHz RAM and according to the BIOS and Memetest + my 6000D's memory is in fact now running at 533MHz. I ran Memetest + for 11 straight passes with 0 errors.

You need, for optimum performance, 200-pin DDR2 SO-DIMM PC4200 @ 533MHz.

the 1 gig sticks I got are 128.00 now and they work great with no errors.

I am looking to upgrade my I6000 memory also, but in the 6000 FAQ, it says that the 6000 runs 400mz memory and the 6000D runs 533mz. I do not have the D model, but I do have 533mz FSB. Can I still upgrade to the PC4200???

Thanks!

Saxxman, I think you can upgrade to the PC4200 but if you have more than one stick of memory, you want them both to be the same ideally.

A question I have, does the I6000 (not D) take 200 pin or 240 pin? I am seeing different things depending where I look. Anyone know for sure? Can it handle both?

SO-DIMMs are 200 pins only for both DDR and DDR2. Only the desktop DDR2 DIMMs use 240 pins.

Hey everyone! I just ordered an Inspiron 6000 from Dell!!

Now I just have to get some RAM and I'm set! Is this the correct RAM I want for my 6000? http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16820144179

That's the only thing that came up in search on Newegg, so am I searching wrong?
By the way I want 2 sticks of 512MB for a total of 1GB, or would it be cheaper to get 1 stick of 1GB? I don't know, I could only find 2 matches when searching, please help!

there is a HUGE thread on memory

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=66754

If you read ALL THE PAGES you will find that a few people have had errors with the KINGSTON and CORSAIR. Though this is a small %, i decided to go with Transcend. Not a single person has reported any problem with transcend and they are priced at 130 w/ free shipping from Newegg.

Buy whatever you want and it will probably work... but atleast NOBODY has had ANY problem with Transcend.

Transcend also has a lifetime warranty and has the same specs as the other memory. PC-4200 and a CAS 4 rating.

Better memory for the cheapest $.

Cant complain.

Ok, now I found what kind of RAM I need, by looking on Dell's site in "parts for your dell" and found that I need PC2 3200 DDR2 SDRAM, 400Mhz, 200-pin SO-DIMM.

I did a search on Newegg for these specs and it only came back with 2 options, Kingston and Gigaram....why only those 2 available? You gotta be kidding me, searching for RAM shouldn't be this hard, why can't I find this RAM in more brands?

Someone help!!

What processor did you choose for your 6000? If you got the Pentium M 730 or higher with the 533 bus, then I recommend what irve210 mentioned. The 6000s have been shipping with PC2 3200 400MHz memory even if you order with one of the processors that supports 533 MHz. If you are pulling the 256MB module, you should just plan on using PC2 4200 533MHz memory. From other threads it appears one 1G 533MHz stick will be on par performance wise as going with two 512MB 400MHz running dual channel. If you don't ever plan to upgrade to 2GB, then two 512MB 533MHz sticks would be the best opition. That is what I have in my 9300.

I did just upgrade my wife's 6000D with the 1GB Transcend memory from Newegg. I yanked the 256MB and popped in the new one last night and it's running like a champ now. Of course they just dropped the price about $10 but are charging shipping. Nets out to $129 + tax if in California. If you have your mind set on two 512MB in order to run in dual channel, they have 533MHz Transcend for $69.99 each which comes to about $147 shipped + tax if in California.

Plus you can sell that 256MB module on ebay for about $25-$30 so you might want to factor that into the equation as well.

Thanks so much ecr72!!! You have been the best help! I got the 2.0Ghz processor. I think I'll get the 1GB stick for $123.50, cheaper than getting 2 sticks of 512MB. Awesome!! This should work great, I'll throw the Dell 256MB stick to the side and slap this baby in, then if I want to upgrade in the future, I'll always have an empty slot.
