errr 76.50 drivers are now available on laptopvideo2go
post #2 of 31
I am kinda nervous about using these drivers. Do they void my warranty? Will it shorten the life of my video card?
No drivers will not void your warranty or shorten the life of your video card. Overclocking will void your warranty and shorten the life of your vid card but so far the only way to o/c the go 6800 ultra is to let coolbits do it autmotically and most of the time it oc's it too high and the computer reboots.
So I can install the 76.50 without "coolbits" oc'ing my gpu?
Yes.

In order to OC your vid card you must download a 3rd party file called "coolbits" which bluedevils mentioned. As long as you don't get the file and install it, you dont need to worry about overclocking the vid card. It can't get overclocked by itself, and the drivers can't overclock it. The drivers are not only safe to install, but recommended for best performance.

But be careful about overclocking, because you might like it

Great!!! Thanks!!!!

Ok. Sorry to keep bugging you all but I just tried to install the driver and it said I dont have the correct hardware or something. I have an I9300 with the 256 geforce 6800go. do the drivers not work with my card?
OK. I figured it out.. I needed the mod'd inf. Thanks again
post #9 of 31
Sorry for being thick but I don't get what that site is all about.

What's with the modified INF files? Why are they needed? Is it because these drivers are released by manufacturers and as standard will only install on a specific brand of machine/card?
You're not thick. It took me a few minutes to figure it out as well.

The drivers on that site are based off of the Forceware drivers for desktop GPUs, not notebooks. If you try to install the laptopvideo2go drivers without the modded .inf file you will get an error like miketmbt had above: "System could not find compatible hardware" or something like that. The modded .inf files allow these desktop drivers to be used with notebooks.

I tried the 76.50's but actually had better results with the 76.44 Xtreme G drivers from Guru3D.

should I remove old drivers before installing new ones or will the new drivers remove the old automatically?
Some people will say yes, some will say no. Personally, I say remove them. I recommend DriverCleaner.

http://www.drivercleaner.net/

Read the readme.txt for instructions.

Thanks for that Odie, I understand now.

So if the official drivers are intended only for desktop chips do they properly support the mobile "Go" variants? If I used them would I lose things like the "Powermizer" settings?

It's not that they are intended only for desktop chips; it's that they are not meant for so-called "OEM" cards. OEM, (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means that - to make a very long explanation short - nVidia passes on support of the product in exchange for giving a much cheaper price. OEM products are also customized for the particular OEM in question, such as Dell in this case. Laptop video cards can be used with particular displays, have different clock settings, bios, etc, depending on who it is for.

The long and short of this means that nVidia doesn't want to be in the business of supporting laptop video cards directly at all; unlike their desktop line - which are made to work with a wide variety of PC's, displays, etc - laptop cards are often customized for a particular laptop and nVidia doesn't want to mess with that.

That is the idea anyway. The reality is these drivers work perfectly fine with our cards; in fact they work better than the ones from Dell. Same goes for the ATI cards in the Sagers, for that matter - I've used the Omega Drivers (custom ATI drivers) for years with my 5680. And yes, you get all the power miser settings, etc with these drivers.

Where is the inf file on my notebook that I need to replace?
Thanks!
Found it - I just replaced my Nv4_disp.inf file in the c:\i386 folder, re-booted, ran the setup.exe and it still tells me it can't find the right hardware - I have the 6800 go - am I doing something wrong?
Thanks...

You replace the inf file in the folder where you extracted the driver, not in the i386 folder. There are instructions on the laptopvideo2go site.

a good question wouild be whether the majority who have tried the new drivers get better performance than the 7644 drivers. Just so I don't have to go through the hassle of installing and running 3Dmark for nothing

Get the modded .inf file as well. Version 30.70 is the recommended file if you're using the 76.50 drivers.
