Im looking to buy a 12 inch powerbook that someone sugggested to me on here last night. Im taking a complete 180 the other way now, after having the dell inspiron im on now, 17 inch. I basically just use my lappy for AIM, music for my iPOD, and the internet, but i would like to know how the display is for these. Anyone know?

Not the best, not as sharp and bright as the latest Sony displays unfortunately and the resolution could be better, but the 12" Powerbook is still a sweet laptop. It depends on what is important to you, a cool aluminum laptop with a great OS and no viruses or spyware or a PC notebook that runs Windows and might have a better display.

unfortunately i would say it is subpar for the industry right now.

What is? Sony's XBrite 2 Screen (on the FS Series) or the 12" PB Screen. Those relflective screens are nice but dang, they are annoying when in a bright room or outside. Hmm very annoying when viewing DVD's, when a dark (Eg. Night time) scene comes up...Turn off the lights!

If all you do is AIM, MP3s, and Internet look into getting an iBook instead. They're much cheaper and just as good.

good point, do not over buy, and the ibook has better battery life as well.

Just curious, what is the battery life on an iBOOK 12 inch and on a PowerBook 12 inch?

I agree on the iBook front. My aunt has one and it runs quiet. i don't own one, but I would say that you shouldn't have any problems with the screens. The battery life would be pretty good on both, but I saw a thread that said the iBook would last longer. All in all, it is a good laptop, and as a plus, you get iChat for AIM. If you are looking to buy online, then I would go through macmall. I haven't ever had a problem with them and they got me my computers on time.

it depends on if he would be happy with an ibook, i had an ibook for a month and it wasn't built well @ all and got dirty as hell. after 1 month's use you would think it was like 2 years old bc the palmrest was black almost. I would definitely pay the extra money again if i had to to get a powerbook. The build quality on my powerbook is probably the best laptop i have ever seen. I just think the ibook is just really cheap compared to a powerbook. If the guy is coming from a 9300, i think he would rather have a powerbook then a ibook, imo.

RMH...did you ever, oh, I don't know, clean your iBook? A little windex on a paper towel will clean it right up.

Hey thanks for the help guys, overall, do you think i can make an easy transition to Apple? i havent used one of those in a good 5 years or so, but it seems simple enough, and it doesnt seem like there will be as many bugs with the OS X as there were with windows

also, im a little concerned now about the iBOOK being made of plastic compared to the PowerBoko alluminum alloy.. will there be a lot of scratches in my iBOOK after using it for a month or so?

i don't think you should buy a laptop for $1,000 and be worried about cleaning it after every use. I don't ever have to clean my powerbook except for wiping off the screen about once a week. The ibook also scratched really easily.

No. It's got a clear hard coating on the outside. The iBook is far more durable than the PB.

As for cleaning it after every use, that's not what he said. You just have to clean it every so often. If your black notebook was white you'd have to do the same thing.

no shit, but it's not white, that's my point. White = dirty as shit. Have to clean it all the time. and the ibook being scratched, mine was super scratched up and i only had it for a month, and i take really good care of my stuff. There is a HUGE quality difference between the powerbook and the ibook. Go for the powerbook, you won't regret it.

and as far as if my black notebook was white it would be dirty, no shit, but it's dark, hence why every other computer maker doesn't make white notebooks, it just doesn't go well with dust and dirt and so on.

the_truth,
i get 3:20 to ~5:30 on my iBook, w/ varying screen brightness, processor management set to auto, and w/ wireless on. my friend gets 5+ on her 14" iBook. on a number of forums, including the apple official ones, ppl often note the 12" PB as getting ~3.5 hrs w/ screen brightness being tweaked and such.
