Now, I'm just an individual and do not own a business. Would I still be able to buy this laptop, and have the warranty still be ok? I mean, if the tech arrives and sees that you are just a student and there is no company, will he refuse to do the work or honor the warranty? What sort of problems could I face if I get this one vs one in the home/home office section? My dad is a chiropractor and has one employee other than himself, so I guess I could put it under his name, but what would happen when I told the tech the laptop is in a different location? Is that still valid under warranty?

Sure you can order thru the Small Business site no problem. When they ask for your business name you just make one up. A lot of people use their last name or something more elaborate for fun. Use your imagination. For instance on the website in your sig if that your site you use the word TeKnow. Even something like that would work.

They cannot say anything or refuse support if they have to send someone to work on the machine. There is no way they can prove that you do not run your own home business. And here is nothing saying you have to even make any money at whatever business name you have.

US home buyers have the "no tax" advantage in some states.

Please Dell, never ever come to NY!

That price seems high... why not get a 600m? You can get the same stuff for $1400.

I believe the reason it appears high, is because that is Canadian money. It is roughly $1650 US. FYI, the 600m does not come with x300 however, so you can't get it with "the same stuff".

could u pls use the search function we have covered this topic atleast 10 times in the last 3 months

Sorry, didn't see the X300 in his config list... still don't... ?? Yes, good point, CAD... missed that.
I guess I'm just wondering why you would be a Latitude over an Inspiron (especially with the coupons and stuff going around). Just making sure holodude is aware of his options before making his purchase. I know I wish I knew about the coupons earlier when I bought my wifes laptop.

Omars14, go away. I don't think holodude has posted about buying a D610 10 times in the last 3 months... and that is the topic. If he has, well sorry for the flame. =)
If you want to be helpful, post the links to the relevant threads.

The reason CHaze you missed the CAD is that I edited that into the post. The X300 is the "ATI 61D16SC" in the beginning. For some reason Dell Canada only lists it as ATI, although in the overview it says x300 and all reviews for the d610 is either the media accelerator 900 or the x300, and so if this says ATI it must be the x300.

I originally looked and even priced out the Inspirons, and even though they have widescreen (which I dislike) I still was unable to get them under the price I'd pay for the d610. Not to mention the fact I don't think they have a modular battery, as I need the long battery life for my 8 hours of lecture at university. The 15% off coupon really helps, along with $10 shipping, and cheaper warranty to make the d610 a steal. Only wish I had a free ram upgrade coupon though. DDR2 is SO expensive.

Also, I have heard that any rebates they send you will be made out to the business you listed, so you're probably best off using your name as your business to be safe.

I bought my D610 for personal use (although I will be doing independent consulting) without issue. I do agree that you can probably find a better deal on the same machine. I picked up my D610 w/ PM-2.0 1GB (2x512) DDR533 80GB HDD X300 IPW2200 & XP Pro for less than 150 USD more (under $1800). I didn't have complete care, but I'm not clumsy or accident prone (knock on wood -- my previous laptop lasted roughly 4 years before hadware failure without any accidents). Remember all the business notebooks come with 3 year mail in warranties when you compare them to the home lines. Also note the 600M uses the older Pentium-M chips and the previous intel chipset (the D610 uses the sonoma chipset).

How does the mail in warranty work? Should I get the normal one year limited, and expect them to offer a 3 year onsite? I'm not prone to clumsyness, although I did once accidently drop my thinkpad and it messed one of the hinges, (ripped the metal 1/2 off) but still not too bad. Don't notice it when I put the plastic piece back. Basically I just need warranty on the screen, hard drive, internal components, keyboard (if keys go - not via spilling or anything like that). I was just going to buy the full 3 year onsite completecare.

By the way, there a way to get a warranty that will allow them to send techs/ship parts on weekends when you buy from dell small business?

I've bought a couple of Precision workstations for home through the Dell small business unit. You will pay tax. That's the difference. They may ask you for a business name, but they have no problem selling to you.

But you will pay tax whether Dell has a business presence in your state or not.

Purchases made through the Employee and Partner plan also pay tax, since that unit has a rep in every state. So the up to 12% discount we enjoy through the company is nearly eaten in half by the tax.

Employee and Partner plan is set up by your company to get disounts on Dell computers, up to 12% depending on how you configure your purchase. And no, I don't know who to contact to set it up. Check with your HR department or Dell.
