Cooling The 5660 And Noise

Hi all,

Looking at the tear down pictures in the 5660 review doesnt look as tho it takes much to get at the CPU.

I am wondering if replacing the thermal compound / Tape that Sager use in the machines with Arctic Silver 3 CPU thermal paste which is known to be the best stuff available.

I assume this would help to dissipate the heat better therefore the fans will run less (I take it they are Temp. Activated and do not run all the time) so therefore less noise.

Also the fans could be replaced depending on their dimensions with some of the silent more expensive fans on the market such as those from www.silentpc.co.uk or similar.

Also looking at the bottom of the Sager they have a PCMCIA cooling fan I have never used a laptop with such a fan and use my PCMCIA slot 24/7 with my wireless network card with no probs.

Is the fan there because of the proximity to the "HOT" cpu and is required or is it feasible to disconnect that fan to cut down on the noise?

Arctic Silver will increase the rate that heat gets transferred from the CPU to the heat sink, but it is the heat sink itself that has to dissipate the heat, with the help of the fans blowing over it.

So with Arctic Silver applied, the CPU temp will probably be a little cooler if the heatsink and fans are able to blow that extra heat away fast enough. However, that means that the fans probably won't run less, b/c they would have more heat to blow away than before.

But if the end result is a cooler CPU, then do it! Arctic Silver is good stuff, albeit a little expensive, since you only use a tiny little amount and then there's not much you can do with the rest of the tube unless you have a bunch of other computers laying around, or a bunch of friends wanting to use some!

Ah your probably right. The only thing it might help then is delay of the automatic Throttling of P4's which is a major discussion point in the DELL forums of the P4 Mobile lovers

I still cannot find a answer as to what temperature this occurs and to what degree it throttles the chip - It would be good if someone developed a CPU Temp sensor reader for the sagers such as fan8kgui for the dell machines.

How noisy is the 56xx? I will be using it in class, and I don't want to disturb everyone.
