dell to use amd

Thread Starter
Dell says that if its customers really, really demand AMD chips, the company will provide them.

The promise comes from none other than CEO Kevin Rollins, and is probably just another indication that Dell is twisting and turning like a twisty turny thing with the mighty Intel or is hanging out for a better deal with AMD.

Rollins comments were made at a press conference that took place at the conclusion of Dell's annual analysts' meeting for Wall Street and the news media.

Reuters claimed that the comments revived speculation that Dell could end its long-standing refusal to use AMD chips, although we have heard that all before.

The man himself said that Dell was "still looking at AMD; they have fairly good technology". Nice of him to say so.

But Rollins added that any decision to make AMD its second supplier of microprocessor chips would mean sweeping changes for related components inside its Dell PCs.

He claimed that the changes would drive up initial production costs, so Dell would turn to AMD chips only if customers demanded them. While Dell would "never say never", customers would have to demand it and the bottom line figures would have to be good, he said.

Rollins claimed that AMD might have trouble meeting additional demand for high-volume PC products, but not necessarily for chips used in high-end PC servers.

maybe AMD for XPS3 but I wouldn't want AMD for mobile laptops, i perfer the Pentium M

I don't know which I prefer, but some of the benches of a 755 versus a comparable AMD are in the AMD's favor... especially when it comes to running CAD programs.

The problem with AMD chips is the battery life is going to be compromised. P-M's seems to be the best at the moment.

Dell is in bed with intel and M$, dont think it will happen. The corp world demand Intel chips and Dell caters to them. I think Dell would comprimise its relationship/pricing with INtel if they offered AMD.
Will NEVER happen. Dell gets too many price breaks that they would lose if they started to offer AMD chips.
Its not about what the consumer wants, its all about Dell's bottom line.

yeah Spazilton is probably correct

Bottom line might be about Dell, but bottom line *could* improve if more people want AMD procs. I, for example, don't really care about battery life in my platforms because I'm mostly plugged in. One hour is bad (eg never a P4 for me in a notebook), but 2 hours (as with AMDs) is fine.

One thing we might not have condsidered is they might be able to make up the losses from intel pricing in their server market. A lot of companies want the AMD opteron.

If Dell offers AMD, we can expect prices to increase. The reason Dell computers are so cheap with coupons, is because they get massive discounts from Intel.

Dell just need to see its competitors do well with AMD. But this is unlikely since HP is going down the drain and Emachine is no where near dell's capacity. Owell, we'll all have to rely on foreign manufacturers and distributors for AMD stuff.

This is simple marketing 101.
It will not happen anytime soon, if at all.

Several years ago this same thing came up, and Dell milked it for all it's worth.
Dell had a couple polls on their site to see what buyers wanted. (ha ha)
Don't remember all the details, but a couple questions were simple, like Should Dell use AMD?, and Would You Prefer AMD to Intel?, and Would You Buy AMD Equipped Dells? It was a huge success for AMD, as at the time most answered with huge YES!!!. (word of these polls got around to AMD forums, which had to help bump up the AMD count). As seen today though, it too was meaningless. Dell is in bed with Intel, and happy to be there. I refused to buy Dell partly because of this crap they pulled, as well as my hate for Intel (from the days they abandoned users runninng Socket 7). With the P-M my view has changed.

Dell is being smart. Where's the benefit to going with AMD? Will it get them higher sales? More market share? Higher profits? Doubtful. As so many others say, going with AMD would lose them Intel discounts - plus Dell is basically an Intel "standard config" reseller.

Beyond that, your typical corporate server buyer knows "I won't get fired for buying Xeon" and doesn't want to justify Opteron's advantages and mostly 2nd-tier server OEMs to executives with short attention spans, myopic next-quarter focus, and inability to follow reasoning processes with more than one step. (Symptoms of the problems in U.S. executive suites... IMHO... too many MBAs, not enough brains and courage)

Your "typical" home buyer (no, not you if you spend any time on these boards or have built your own PC!) only knows "Pentium" and "that Centrino thing". They have never heard of Athlon or AMD. They see "Extreme Edition" etc. etc. and out come the credit cards. This isn't bad or good: it just shows the might of the Intel marketing machine, which is lightyears ahead of AMD at crafting a compelling message for end consumers and getting PC OEMs on board too. I see it all the time with friends/family when they want buying advice or PC help. Dell plasters the airwaves and print media with ads touting simplicity and task appropriateness ("ideal for college students"... etc.) - when was the last time you saw an ad linking AMD and long battery life, low heat, and performance - all are true but nobody knows.

HP is navel-gazing and still has Comcrap indigestion, and will be a lost cause for some time. eMachines concentrates on the low end. Dell plays both sides relentlessly - and intelligently. IBM is selling out because they can't make it despite legions of Thinkpad fans in corporations. Sony is a joke for business and is in trouble too internally, read recent Wall Street Journal articles. Sager is great but niche, and even they do not have a modern AMD product. Nobody is threatening Dell operationally! Why *would* Dell ever settle on either side? Reminds me of the maneuvering in James Clavell's "Shogun"... manipulate, manipulate, hint, hint, and so on. Never come down firmly when you don't have to.

All that said, I work for a company that is all Dell... PCs, laptops, and servers. But our next batch of servers, to be purchased this year, will be Opteron-based... And when there are good, solid, corporate PCs and laptops based on Athlon (not consumer fluff nonsense), we'll look at those. Dell or not. 'Nuff sed.

Not to mention DELL gets first dibs on all New hardware intel pushes out which means they can offer new technology right away (first sonoma badass notebook) not to mention they most likely get the highest volume of all intel hardware thus the least amount of shortages compared to other companies.

I have owned Intel dumbtel and Amd... I agree that amd may drain some battery life, but if you are buying lappie as a desktop replacement... and you are a gamer. AMD is the way to go. AMd beats Intel Pentium Extreme or anything Intell can put out... That said. Dell would never ever go AMD... yes, I know, never say never... but this is the guy who also says you will never see Dell at a retail store like Bestbuy, CircuitCity, CompUsa, like Apple did. It's the Texass way. And the bottom line if you read that letter is not what the people asks is how much money we can make. We are already making a killing with intel p-m chips... can you imagine? change mobos, incorporate via chips, change everything... That will cost them and they will past that cost to us... BUT... for that to happen... there has to be a shift into AMDs. We the gamers are the ones in the US for that matter allowing Intel to live... in Europe, Latin America and Eastern Europe AMD still is king.
