Can anyone help? In media player and winDVD unless the aspect ratio is 1.85:1 widescreen i get huge bars verticaly as well as horizontally. If I select fit to screen it does so anyway.

Is there anyway I can strecth it so it covers the whole screen ,I don't mind the horizontal bars but this is very annoying..even if i try to ignore the aspect ratio it still does it.I have like a tiny little window in the middle of my screen no matter what i select

Maybe your video source has the black bars included in it, so the media player doesn't know to cut it out. I have yet to find a player that can crop a video clip though...
Or maybe you just got some settings wrong, if you're playing a widescreen DVD you should never have bars on the sides unless they are part of the video footage... Is this with all DVD's, recent ones, or just some?

AllPlayer (free) is a good one. And zoom player (not free).

Some movies (e.g., Mulan) do put black bars on the sides even on a 4:3 screen.

Yeah, some movies do put black bars in...

However (for the top and bottom bars), a -lot- of widescreen movies are at 2.35:1, so you'll just have less black than someone with a 4:3 screen would (most widescreen LCDs are 16:10).

power dvd has some interesting tricks

Heh heh. Yet another reason why I will stick with 4:3 screens for my computers. You can have a bunch of menus for controlling the playback onscreen without obscuring any of the video (because you can just position the menus over the horizontal black bands...)

What player are you using? Power DVD doesn't side bar on my widescreen. And though DVD support is minimal to lacking, BS Player has very flexible (including desktop mode) display options for all other kinds of video.

P.S. Is there perhaps some overlooked display option in your Display Properties?

i have looked pretty thoroughly. widecreen is the only format that doesn't have the black bars on the side. on a widescreen tv you can strech non widescreen to avoid the bars but in media player and windvd i can't find a display function to do it..whatever i select i still have the vertical bars

btw thanks for the feedback to all
