9300 with nVidia 6800 Ultra, need help - Page 4

Perhaps it is really as simple as using the XPS2 power adapter....
could be, the 6800 ultra uses alot more power then the 6800.

It may require a 9 cell battery and a xps power adapter.

So has anyone actually got a bios change along with the 6800 go Ultra in the 9300 yet to see if it works? Or, is anyone currently in the process of trying this? I was just curious.
I'd like to try it, but I kind of lack the cashflow. :P
post #65 of 109
ok, so quick summary:

6800 Go Ultra doesn't work on the 9300 per stock config.
A 9300 WILL run the XPS 2 Bios if you own a 9 Cell Battery and a 130 W power adapter. I got to Windows but I did NOT see if the 6800 Go (not ultra) was supported by the XPS 2 bios (IE, I didn't try to play any games and see if it was functioning extra slowly).

When I get some spare cash I will try the 9300 with a 6800 Go Ultra with the required goodies, but at the moment I cannot afford the $400 for the video card.

I have hex edited BIOS updates that will change a 9300 over to the XPS 2 and vice versa (so you can go back to the 9300 BIOS after you've flashed it to the XPS 2 BIOS).

An interesting idea would be for someone with a XPS 2 to run the 9300 BIOS update and see how the ultra runs with the 130 W power adapter. If anyone is willing to do this, send me a PM and I will email you the patched BIOS updates. They run in DOS-mode so you will have to make a boot disc. I use the Ultimate Boot CD, then Maddox boot disk with a clean boot. Then I just pop in another CD with the BIOS updates.

Hi all new to here!

Yes!! I have a working mod! I have a 9300 with a nvidia geforce go 6800 ultra in, and some amazing 3dmark05 scores! will post those in general later!

Not to many components needed so should be able to offer anyone with a 9300 an upgrade pack to enable a inspiron 9300 with 6800 ultra to work at full speed!

Am working on a full pictures and step guide how I did it so should be here shortly, here is a bit af a short parts and step guide.

Parts needed:
1. Geforce go 6800 ultra card
2. new chipset heatsink from an xps gen2
3. 130W power adapter
4. 9 cell 9300/xps2 battery
5. slight plastic cuttout from the palm rest

Steps taken!
1. Removed Screen and palm rest
2. Removed old graphics card
3. Removed old chipset heatsink
4. Removed rubber spacers from cpu fan bay
5. Installed new XPS Gen2 Chipset Heatsink
6. Installed new 6800 ultra card
7. Cut away small amout of plastic from the Palm rest to fit around new Chipset heatsink + new 6800 ultra heatpipe.
8. fitted palm rest and screen back on.
9. Loaded XPS Gen 2 A01 bios through dos (thanks to Hazridi in notebookforums for the hacked bios)
10. loaded new xps gen2 A02 bios!
11. Loaded new 6800 ultra drivers in XP!
12. Fully working!!

Here we go! the moment you have all been waiting for!

Inspiron 9200 1.6GHz wxga+ 40GB 5400rpm HD
installed 9300 motherboard! used Chip wire mod for the cpu (2.13Ghz fully stable!)
2x 512MB 533mhz dd2 ram
nvidia geforce go 6800 ultra
XPS GEN 2 A02 bios

Dell xps gen 2 6800 ultra driver no over clocking on GPU(well CPU has!)
3dmark05 score 4926

nvidia tweeked 77.62 drivers no overclocking
3dmark05 score 5289

nvidia tweeked 77.62 drivers auto overclocking on (fans hardly on)
3dmark05 score 5467!!!!!

@mbosys-Let me get this straight. You took a 9200, then swapped in the 9300 mobo, and the 6800U, and it works!!! Congrats, you got more guts than I do.
wow, so you basically had 3 systems in one? lol
post #69 of 109
No he took a 9300 I think he hit 2 instead of 3.

So the parts I order are from the XPS spare parts right.

130w power block

9-cell battery

Can yes see some pics, and links to the 3dmark scores.

No I went from a 9200 > 9300 > and xps2 partly! no LED's or covers!

If you have a 9300, you will also need the 6800 Ultra! and the chipset heatsink, from an xps2.

Is there anywhere I can upload the pics on here?

Upload the images to www.imageshack.us and use their link to post pics here.

Did you just buy the parts you needed, and just set the other ones to the side?

Wow that news got me really excited! Hopefully we'll have plenty of upgrade options open to us later on down the line as well. For now, having a 2.23 Pin Modded Processor and a Geforce 6800 Ultra sounds pretty damn sweet. Thanks mbosys, please post a guide soon!

That is some extreme modding...
As said by others; this is great news. If the 6800 Ultra is $400, the 6800Go has to be worth at least $200 to someone with an X300.. making this a very tempting upgrade...
HMMMMMM.....IF he did this with a 6800 Ultra.....and if i remeber correctly the 7800's (new ones lol) talk LESS power than a 6800.....Im guessing in ONE year, we can get a 7800 and place it in a 9300 WITHOUT using the xps gen 2's power thingy, cuz the 7800 take less power correct?/

OhH BOOY....BRING ON THE MODS BABY!...(and the $$$...forgot about that little thing)...

I sure hope so :P

Maybe dell will even offer the 7800 upgrade for 9300 owners with a simple flash upgrade ...
Too bad the damn powerbricks are so expensive from Dell.

Going to do this mod when the need and money is there.

Oh, and one more thing...is it possible to use the XPS2 heatsink in a 9300 with Go6800 (non-Ultra)?
So you got the Ultra for 300 huh....Prolly about the same as just upgrading to a XPS...Why mod a 9300 to be like a XPS just get a XPS, they are BADDD!!!!!
Actually the XPS tends to be a LOT more expensive than a 9300 since they are not eligible for the crazy Dell $750 off coupons that seem to pop up every month or so. I think the XPS would be about $1400 more than what I paid for my well equipped 9300.
