A couple of final questions.....

Thread Starter
Alright, so I have my eye on the 12 and 14 inch powerbook, and have a few questions before I make the move......

1. First off, is there any reliable source saying what will be updated this April? Obviously Tiger will be standard (i hope), but what else?

2. Applecare Protection Plan - Is it worth it? I get a student discount I think, and money is a issue, so I would rather be safe than sorry. If I decided to upgrade the hard drive and memory myself will that void the warranty? Does it cover batteries?

3. Is there rumors on updates for the powerbooks? I love those guys, but I just cant justify spending the money on something like that for what I will be doing on it. If they throw down another update, I just might have to quite being a pussy about it.....

Any input is appreciated...........

1. as i've noted in other threads, the iBooks have been updated in april and october for the last 3 years. the refreshes usually involve a processor boost, so the 12" would likely get 1.33Ghz while the 14" would get either 1.42 or 1.5Ghz speed. it may be possible that RAM and HDs will be upgraded as well. IMO, it's more likely that they might do a HD upgrade than the RAM as apple needs to keep the powerbooks "premium" w/ the 512MB standard configuration. i'd be surprised if the 12" iBooks didn't start getting 40GB drives over the usual 30 this time around. so, realistically i'd expect the 12" iBooks to get 1.33Ghz chips and Tiger, w/ a possibility of a 40GB drive. i'd expect the 14" systems to stay the same in re: to HD since 60GB is a pretty solid stock configuration, and for them to get one of the mentioned speed boosts.

2. much like any extended warranty, yes, it is worth it in the event that u get a lemon instead of an apple. be sure to compare the student discount price w/ a place like lacomputer. apple will charge u taxes, so if you're not living in CA, they will be able to beat apple's price. in either case however, the student rate for the extended care is not unreasonable when compared to other brands. u don't have to purchase the warranty when u purchase your Mac. just like any other brand, u have the option to purchase the extended warranty any time before the standard 1 year warranty expires.

3. PB updates have been done in january and june for the last few years as well. if in fact the G5 laptop or whatever, is due by the end of the year, there is some speculation that, the usual june refresh will be delayed. however, we won't know until june.
