Dual 5680 Review

hey, this review will incorporate 2 sager 5680s. My friend from high school and I ordered our laptops from pctorque.com on August 20th. We were going to buy the 5670 because we were going to college but decided to wait. We received our laptops almost a month later, Sept 17th. My friend (now my college roommate) received both our laptops and here is a quick review.

Ordering: I tried to order the day before (sept 19) but couldnt because my parents credit card kept getting declined. I called up the next day and they verified the identity etc. and immediately the transaction went through. At first i ordered the uxga screen. two weeks later i switched to sxga+ and then a few days after that i changed back to uxga. thanks to pctorque for being patient ;] here are the specs i ordered (as well as my roommate)
15" UXGA
2.6ghz p4
512mb ddr ram
60 gb 5400 rpm hard drive
wireless lan
No operating system

i guess i'll start off with the bad:
1. The laptop cases are not too great but they were freebies so its no big deal
2. My roommates laptop has one dead pixel in the upper left quadrant
3. My processor fan seems to need some oil. It sounds like an old car with a little chirping noise. I'm gonna turn it off tonite and try tomorrow morning to see if it goes away.
4. It gets quite hot.

Everything else is pretty much perfect. I havent tested out all the bells and whistles but everything seems all good. The only odd thing is that windows update doesnt show that i need to download SP2. I have SP1 currently installed. I'm not a big benchmark buff, just real life qualtiy on gameplay. If anyone requests me to run some benchmarks, i dont mind doing it however.

The video card drivers i used were the WHQL drivers off the driver cd. Does anyone reccomend any other drivers?

I am very happy with this laptop so far....i'll post anymore updates if need be.

also if you want pics i can take some but i do need someone to host them. How does 2 5680s side by side sound? :]

I'm assuming you're installing Win2k, as an SP2 doesn't yet exist for WinXP?

I'd say you get rid of those WHQL drivers immediately and reinstall the newer 7.93 drivers. You WILL see a LARGE performance jump with those...

All I can say is, enjoy!

huang huang, hes the mang! (sorry had to say that)

where can i get the new drivers that you mentioned james?
They're also on the CD, aka the non-WHQL drivers. I don't know if this is the case on the 5680's, but on the 8890's alpha blending is slow as hell with the WHQL drivers, and it ate gaming performance.

you should take pics of the laptops playing games. that would get my motor running

are the 7.93 drivers the beta drivers?
Well, I don't believe they're beta. In fact, I heard somewhere else that the 7.93 drivers for the M10 is actually the latest Catalyst 3.7 drivers. In any case, they rule on my 8890. No more ****ty alpha blending performance. Aside from odd frame drops in some games (Black and White reports 140 fps, but still jumps every once in a while), perhaps attributed to the LCD, the graphics rule with the new drivers.

haha thats odd. I did believe there was an sp2 for WinXP because windows update created a temp folder named sp2 but when i tried to run setup, it failed.

I heard ppl were still having problems with the beta drivers. Is this ture or should I be safe installing them. I'd rather have stability over performance.

I don't have any games yet (how embarassing is that?) so I will try to post pics as soon as I get my hands on a demo. One thingi was wondering was whether there was a way to brighten the LCD. Seems like it is sort of dark. I am running on AC adapter, not the battery. Thanks

hit the fn key + f9 or right click your desktop background, go to properties, click the settings tab, click the advanced button, now click the color tab and you'll see the color and gamma there.

hey, i am having a slight problem

my volume icon in systray has seemed to disappear

I went into sound properites under control panel and tried to check mark "show volume icon in systray" but i got an error saying windows cannot put the icon in the systray because the volume icon is not installed and that i should use add/remove programs to install it. What the hell did i do? (this happened right after playing medal of honor demo)

Another question i have is that i disabled my touchpad and installed my logitech mx700 with drivers from logitech website. Now my touchpad doesnt show up under mouse properties, but my touchpad still functions if i use it (very annoying when typing). Is there a way to totally disable it but still be able to easily enable it?

Beta drivers are called beta because they havent been tested by M$ (thats what WHQL means, I think - Windows Hardware Quality List, or something similar). They work fine for me.

I never disabled my touchpad. I bought myself a M$ optical mouse and just plugged it in. Since I installed the touchpad drivers, they had taken over the mouse settings and what I discovered is that the wheel speed settings I specified for the USB mouse reset every time I rebooted. Thus, I got rid of the touchpad drivers and am running mouse-driver-free; both the touchpad and the USB mouse work fine.

What you might want to do is unplug the logitec mouse, reboot, go through the device manager and see if there are any mouse devices listed. If there are, delete them (theyll be detected next time you boot). If theyre not there, try searching for new hardware (one of the toolbar buttons in dev. manager).

Did you ever get this fixed? I have the same problem with my 5680.

Hey, this doesn't answer any questions, but nice choice in a college laptop. I'm a freshman, and have a 5670. I had to have it at the start of school, so I couldn't wait for the 5680, but I will upgrade sometime in the future. Probably far in the future. Trust me, its fun to have a computer that runs better than my room mate's dell. Hehe.

LMAO. Didnt notice before, but this is exactly what happened with Syndicat3 and myself . We're not in the same class or even faculty now, but are both in the all-mighty-in-math-and-engineering University of Waterloo ( ).

i have still not fixed the problem and it hasnt gone away yet. I might try opening it up but i'm not sure how im gonna isolate where the sound is coming from since i cant turn on the laptop while its open. I might end up sending it back to sager when I dont need it, but right now i am defenitely using it for college. I can tell you that its a fan in the top left portion of the keyboard.

I have the same chirping problem on mine, and I believe it to be the same fan as yours. The sound is only produced in mine when the fan is on what I believe to be moderate speed - it doesn't occur during intensive computing/gaming. This problem is actually fairly serious, as I would be pretty wary of using my system in meetings/class for this reason. Perhaps we should start a new thread about this topic.

Mine chirps only at a certain speed of the fans. Anything lower or higher is just fine. I bet its just the way the fan is designed (dont know why though).
