Copper Mod Results

DO NOT DO THIS MOD UNLESS YOU ARE OKAY WITH VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY

I finished the copper mod last night and had some difficulties that may actually have worked to my advantage. My previous idle and load temps were 54/72 for the CPU and 48/66 for the GPU. Along with cleaning out the fans and the chassis for dust, I also went ahead and put arctic silver between the heatsinks on the Northbridge and the CPU. I then cracked open the MR9800 and put the AS5 on all the VRAM and on the GPU. The copper however was not the thickness I wanted. I bought it from a craft store and it was about .5mm thick or so. It did a fine job on the VRAM but I had to put three 3cmx3cm pieces on top of eachother with AS5 in the middle instead of the one thicker piece. Needless to say, with these fixes my temperatures are astoundingly low. Idle and load on the CPU are 42/58 and the GPU is 37/46. In addition I am now able to overclock my MR9800 to 522Mhz Core without artifacts or lockups, the RAM however will not budge over 402Mhz without creating artifacts. 500mhz is a stock Radeon 9800 right?

Desktop Cards:

9800Pro: 380/340
9800XT: 412/365

X800 nonPro PCIe (12PP): 390/350

Your 9800 should be faster that the X800. The GPU of the X800 is faster but with the higher ram clockrate your card owns it!

Great job! Time for hunting 6800 go cards!

artic silver 5 after a 100 hours or so will give you even better temps when it cures.

How about some benchmarks with that new overclock?

Sure thing. Ill give it a go tonight when I get home. I wish I still could get the RAM from my last MR9800 it would clock to 424Mhz without artifacts. Damn, I can't wait for it to cure. I am wondering if I can break 60K on Aquamark with this thing. Or break 4k with 3DMark05.

You VRAM is pretty low...my core speed is about 40 MHz lower than yours but my VRAM is much higher. My CPU is also at stock 3.4 GHZ 800 FSB. No copper mods, no AC5 mods (except to CPU, which didn't help at all for some reason). And look at my benchies!

It's more desireable to have a higher vram as in my experience, core speeds don't help as much.

Nonetheless, great overclock...my card complains if I go over what it is set at in my sig.

Alright, so far I've done AquaMark3 and I was a little dissapointed but I am going to give 3DMark05 a spin. I recieved around 60K.

The aquamark score depends more on CPU speed, that result is pretty good. I think you will get app 3500 3dmark 2005 points and 8400 3dmark 2003 points.

Just a question about these temps you are reporting. Are you taking these temps with the fans on high or their default settings?

Wow thomaszak that is one heck of a good mod you got there. Congrats and I hope you break some records as well. Those temps are astounding.

Okay, as far as the fan speeds go, I have it setup so that my third fan is always at 3000rpm and the other two are controlled by fangui so that if it gets over 45 degrees they kick up to high from low.

Ahh, and yes I broke the 3DMark05 high score.

If you want pix of ATI Tool or CPUFSB you will have to wait until I get home. Ill post those too if you want. Pictures of? The 3DMark score? Lets see...

Congrats Thomaszak...kicka**!!

What score do you get in 3dmark03? You said you put copper on the VRAM. What about the chips on the bottom of the card? Did you do anything with those chips? Any pictures of the actual mod?

Good work indeed.

One thing confuses me. Your original temperature was 54/72 for the CPU and 48/66 for the GPU, final - on the CPU are 42/58 and the GPU is 37/46. My GPU temperature is always higher then CPU temperature (except when I just loaded CPU and its temp jumps above GPU's, but soon GPU will overrun CPU). I was explained why it's happening. Can you explain why your CPU temp is lower then GPU's? Sure I have Northwood and you - Prescott, but I had not-overclocked MR9700 and you - overclocked MR9800 and still it's cooler then CPU... Have you made any other mods?

The AS5, which I also used on the P4, is why my CPU temp is now lower than my GPU. Sorry if I didn't make that clear .

I will do 3DMark03 and 01 tonight (in a few minutes). I guess I took it for granted that most people haven't done this mod yet. I should've taken pictures. There are no chips on the underside of the card, the VRAM is topside and to the bottom and right of the GPU. I used AS5 and copper (thinner) on those as well.

Interesting. My mr9800 has four chips on top in the same location as yours and 4 chips on the bottom also. The newer mr9800's must be using different VRAM.

Sorry I've put my question backward. I meant to ask why is your GPU' temp is lower then CPU temp - before and after the mod.
