I'm looking for a notebook cooler system for my ASUS M6BNe. I'm going to be in school this summer in a house that doesn't have air conditioning. Its gonna get hot in that house so I just want something that I can put my notebook on to keep it somewhat cool.

I would go for the Nexus w/ heat pipe technology. Its quiet, light, draws no power and has a quiet, understated elegance to it.

I, too, have the Antec. I love it.

I like that its quiet, but is it effective as a notebook cooler? I couldn't care less if its portable because I want to use it as a "docking station" type of thing (as in I'm not going to take it with me to class, etc.).

I just want something thats effective as a cooler, isn't ridiculously loud and will fit my M6BNe.

Did some looking around and found this review of the Kingwin ultra-cool.
http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/coolin...cool/index.htm
Here at newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...996-401&DEPA=0

I still need to get a hold of one, and this one caught my eye. Primarily because the air vents are NOT on the bottom, they are on the sides of it. Secondly because of the card readers it has.

I still have one doubt though, wasn't mentioned in the review at cluboc.net. Is the air intake is on the top of the cooler, and exhaust on the sides? Or the other way around? I assume its the first, but never hurts to make sure. My z80k has 2 fans on the bottom, so... yea, need that intake on top

I have the Vantec and the Antec, but I would go with the Cooler Master pad. I have seen many posts about the Nexus pad which have stated that although it does work to some extent the cooling isn't that great.
Here is the order I would put them in in terms of cooling effectives on the ones I know
Coolermaster Coolpad>Vantec>Antec>Nexus.

Like I said I have both the Antec and Vantec. I have disassembled the Antec to rearrange the fans in various positions (both blowing upward, downward, etc) and nothing I can do can make it as good as the Vantec. The Vantec and Coolermaster also have fan speed controllers with the Antec does not, and the Vantec fans are capable of higher rpms which translate to better cooling.
Here is an article comparing the vantec and the antec.

I like the fact that the Coolermaster Coolpad is made entirely of aluminum but what confuses me is the caution labels:
# Caution 1: In order for the fan to operate normally, 5V 500mA is needed at the USB port.
# Caution 2: Ensure that there is power going into the USB port before connecting the fan

How would I know if my USB port is giving off 5V 500mA? And in reference to Caution 2, if I leave the USB plugged in all the time (when the notebook is on or off), what will happen when I turn on the notebook?

My suggestion:

That ought to keep your notebook cooled.

Well, if you can manage to put an external screen and keyboard on the lid of the cooler, I'm sure lots of people will buy it.

From reading reviews on the net, and from your responses, I've narrowed it down to these 3:

(1) Cooler Master CoolPad (PNC-U51) Aluminum Notebook Cooler $42
(2)KINGWIN UC3 Ultra Cool Mutli-Function Notebook Cooling Pad w/ Fan Speed Control, USB2.0 Hub and Card Reader $48
(3) Vantec LapCool (LPC-201) Notebook Cooler w/ Built-in 4-port USB2.0 Hub $42 (or the LapCool2, if I can find it in a store in the GTA)

Any more suggestions/comments?

I own the Bytecc, and i love it. It sits under my Alienware Area-51m. During Half LIfe 2, and other games my laptop fans never spin up to the full rpm's. This thing is really nice, you can connect it either PS2, or USB. Since all of my UBS ports are filled i use the other. And the pad its self never gets hot. I would reccomend to anyone!

The problem with the Bytecc cooler is that I think it may be a too small for my M6BNe. The dimensions of the cooler is 30cm x 23cm, whereas the dimensions of the base of the M6 is 35cm x 28cm.

How would I know if my USB port is giving off 5V 500mA?
I'm interested on that point too.
As far as I know the only way to power it with 500mA is by using a powered usb hub (for the coolpad alone).
in my case I've plugged and external hd enclosure to the usb hub sucking away 100mA out of the 500mA available.
Would the coolermaster work if my port is only giving 5V and 400mA?

I'm currently unhappily using a vantec lapcool2 and have a couple of days to return it and buy the coolermaster.
The only reason I'm waiting is because I haven't got a full 500mA usb plug...

thank you for letting me know!

Regards

Are you sure any of these will make a difference? I've seen reviews where they add heat by directing hot air into the wrong places.

I'd try raising the back of your laptop first, so air circulates.

Mind you, I've just checked your laptop, the Asus M6. It shouldn't need a cooler. I had one and it never got too hot. It vents to the side so a cooler may not do too much anyway.

My own opinion is that if a laptop needs a cooler, it is badly designed and best left alone.

Cheers

Steve

Does the Kingwin UC3 comes in different sizes? I got one that fits exactly with my 15'' laptop but I'm expecting my Area-51m 7700 soon (???) and I'm thinking if this would work with it. Excessive gaming = Execessive heat

Don't get the Nexus, if you really want to cool your laptop, as it really doesn't help much. I've tried it with a low power G4 PowerBook and it really doesn't do enough of cooling for that kind of laptop.

i just got the antec cooler today, its pretty good, doesn't cool as fast as the cheap ebay cooler with 3 fans though.

Anyone recommend one with a 17" screen?
