Fn+F10 Fan Hotkey - beeping & flashing - ungraceful shutdown

I may have a problem with the Fn+F10 Fan Hotkey on my 8790.

My system operates like this:
I boot up and let the system hit its steady state idle temp of around 48 *C (mobmeter.exe)
When I want to run the fans at full speed, while backing up my system (RAID 0 on two 80GB 5400RPM drives generates some heat) or gaming, for example, I hold down the Fn key and then tap the F10 key, I hear a short double beep, and the fans WHOOSH to life.
According to what I've read at notebookforums.com there are two fan modes available and the double beep indicates that I've activated the "wide open" mode rather than the "full auto" mode.
I figured out how to get the single beep "full auto" mode by holding, rather than taping, the F10 for a duration longer than the double beeps would take.

The strange thing is that, in either mode, but more often in the "wide open" mode, at some point my system starts beeping and flashing the NUM LOCK and CAPS LOCK lights in sync with the beeps, and sometimes, not always, the system will shut down (ungracefully).
During this beeping and flashing time the Fn+F10 keys do not respond and I am unable to put the fans back to their idle speed and avoid a potential ungraceful shutdown.
If the system does not shut down the beeping & flashing will occur again in 3 to 5 minutes, each time I have no idea whether the shutdown will or will not occur.

I understand that the system is going to do a shutdown when it beeps and flashes, what I don't understand is WHY.
I cannot locate any information on this in my manual for the system or in the forums.

Please advise.

Found "workaround" in this forum. Still curious.

In typical techy fashion I'm going to reply to my own post having done more searches on this forum and finding helpful information.
But I still need to understand why the 8790 operates this way.

See a working temporary "workaround" in the following post:
http://notebookforums.com/showpost.p...8&postcount=13

I also read several posts about keeping the heatsink clean and what the flashing lights and ungraceful shutdown mean ---- OVERHEAT ----

My system just came back from its last warranty repair and I'm sure I'm clean but I'll take a look under the hood JIC.

FYI, using the workaround the fans are wide open and I'm doing a V2i Protector backup image and the system temp is at 48C.

Great information here.
Now if I could only get my Fn+F10 keys to do anything but beep... they dont adjust my fans speed at all. I just here a beep or two.

Doug, your unit may have a faulty temperature sensor - or - even though it recently came back from being fixed, the thermal transfer compound between the CPU and Heat Sync may have been misapplied.

The blinkling light sequence that you describe is the normal "DANGER ALARM" for a severly overheated device.

I'd call Sager or your reseller immediately.

Thanks G-Omaha I've now got a email trail going with Sager tech support on this matter.
What is strange is the system ONLY overheats when the fans are wide open.
When I don't use the Fn+F10 to blast the fans, and I let the system run the fans at medium speed all the time, I never get the flashing lights and shut down.
That is why I'm thinking its a dirt or heatsink fin blockage or something.
My unit is now off the 1 year manufacturer's warranty and on the extended warranty so I'm not too sure what my options will be to resolve this issue.
Perhaps I should just get some of that Artic Silver stuff and take her apart and put her back together again.

FYI All,
Sager Tech Support had me create a boot CD that can be used to flash the BIOS and the KBC (whatever that is) and I followed their instructions and everything is working great!!!
I was running BIOS V122 1.00.10 and KBC 1.00.F6 and after interrupting the BIOS flash and running the h8-f2 batch file, thus flashing the KBC to 1.00.F2, all is well.
If anyone needs the ISO for the boot CD just let me know and I'll email it out.
Sager NP8790 ONLY !!!!
I'm not responsible for its use if I send it to you !!!
It did work for me though.
I now get all the correct beeps for both fan modes, auto and wide open, and I never get the OVERHEAT alarm flashing lights followed by a shut down.
I didn't have to clean anything or send the system back for a faulty temperature sensor or anything so I'm elated !!!

Doug,
Please check your PM. I would like a copy. It may just fix my fan problem as well.
Thx in advance

Believe KBC is same as firmware revision. Mine is KBC 1.00.04

Doug it worked perfectly for mine as well. Thank-you.
Just to make sure I also emailed tech support at Sager and they sent me the very same one with the same instructions as they did for you!!
Finally my FN+F10 functionality works for the fans, seems I just needed the firmware update since I had the bios update already.
