Acer and Toshiba have good laptop/tablet convertibles, and fujitsu has a few good tablets also. I'd love to get a convertible, but I'd need a desktop to complement it, because tablet pcs are really lacking when compared to normal laptops or desktops.

the HP TC1100 seems to be one of the best...and it fits the mold for both, as the keyboard for the "convertable" is actually detachable....they also have a new TC4200 that is a full on convertible that is based on the sonoma platform

What sort of power are you looking for?

Look at the Fujitsu models as suggested.

The Toshibas, however are products of much inferior quality and reliability, they are certainly to be avoided.

May I suggest a cautionary note: Tablets have not become popular, and there must be reasons for this. Yes, some people/occupations do find them useful. But I personally know only one person who owns a tablet (a convertable, actually), but nearly everyone has a notebook.

I want to make clear I am not knocking tablets, just suggesting you talk to owners (and I am not one), or if at all possible, borrow one for a weekend or so.

The main problem with tablets is cost, although that is changing now. They also don't work very well if they are too big. And the choice of CPU and GPUs hasn't been great. All things being equal though, if I had the choice between a convertible tablet and a plain laptop I would choose the tablet.

I have a big DTR and a very small tablet (10 inch screen) and the combo works well for me.

I think they have done a very good job with slates in terms of CPUs and gpus and dont really think they could do much better. A lot of people like to carry their tablets in their arm and the P-M is great for this, because of its heat dissipitation, and the gpus cant be too powerful, or else you will be burned. As a tablet pc owner I am sure you know about this, but for others tht might be wondering why it is that they seem to be underpowered, well, it is because you cant really put something extremely powerful in them and then expect for people to carry them around in their arm comfortably, without getting burned.

To the person that started this thread, I am sure I and several other TPC owners can answer some of your questions, if you have any specific ones, so go ahead and ask away

well the main thing i want to know i dont think this forum lets you post. So what i want to know is what stores would have them instock and have floor models. Like not web sites but some where i can go and try them out and look at them more.

The second one is what would be a good one thats is 1.5GHz or 1.7GHz maybe. I really dont know much about them seeing as i havent seen a store that has any but fry's(i dont know if i can say that lol) and they only had 2 for sale and one was open box i think.

I see. Finding a store where they have models on display will definetely be difficult, especialy given the delicate nature of Tablet PCs.

In regards to a notebook with 1.5 or 1.7GHz, the best I can recommend is the Toshiba M200. It is definetely one of the best tablets out there and it, along with the HP TC1100, has the most powerful gpu available on a tablet pc to date. In fact, it is one of the few that actualy has a dedicated gpu, which even thoughyou dont need it for gaming, will definetely make a difference over the intel integrated graphics solution used by the other Tablet PCs.

I recommend you visit www.tabletpcbuzz.com as it is one of the most active tablet pc forums on the net and they might have some better answers than us here. Besides that, most of the people there actualy own a tablet pc, have owned one, or are like you, and are looking into the matter.

If you have any other questions that I might be able to help you with here, feel free to ask.

I'd also recommend the Toshiba M205. I've seen them at Best Buy, and Circuit City and CompUSA also carry them. CompUSA have a special on them at the moment for $1299, which is half the price they normally cost.

Cheers

I believe the M205 is the same as the M200, only the 205 is called that because it is sold through retail channels. If CompUSA has it at that price, I recommend that you try to get a look at one and consider it cool. It is a very nice tablet PC and it also has a nice resolution of 1400x1050, along with a 12 inch screen. It is a convertible, but I do not know if that is a + or - for you.
yes that is a +. Do you know how long it will be that price?

well it would seem that the 5 or 6 with in 16 miles from me are out of stock and its a pick up only thing lol

does any one know if the Gateway M275XL is any good or what gateways thing is with dead pix
post #17 of 24
one question guys..im also reconsidering a tablet pc

and was wondering what were the different types? (ie. convertables, etc.)

and what type this one is: http://www.pioneercomputers.com.au/cart/pdf/T200C.pdf
post #18 of 24
Regarding the Gateway M275, when it first came out more than a year ago (year and a half ?), it was probably the most powerful convertable available. It was also one of the heaviest.

Since all of Gateway's notebook lineup from a year ago has been replaced with newer models, I suspect that a replacement for the M275 will be available soon.

That's a convertible based on a Clevo model. It's sold in the States by Sager.

The M205 will be at that cheap rpice for a while. It is being run out to make room for the new model.
