To Dx9 or Not TO Dx9

everytime I look at what programs on windows update to install I see the dx9. but I have a premonition everything on my laptop will burn (figuratively)

any ideas why I shouldn't?

I wanna know about this too.

It scares me that MS put the DX9 in their "Critical Updates" section.

Is this just an update for the graphics only
or does it patch some security holes as well.

DX9 should only be a graphics thing. If you have a DX9-compatible card (eg. on the 5680/8890), you should install it.

... Unless you have hyperthreading that is. There are histories of problems with hyperthreading activated and dx9

DX9.0b recently went to Critical Updates because of a security hole allegedly found in all versions of DirectX. I'm still doing a wait and see on this one because of the mixed results (some good, some not so good) of DX9 on the 8887 H-T.

I have Dx 9 running on my 5680 w/ hyperthreading enabled and i haven't had a problem yet. Well i did get one lock up in BF 1942, but i think that's because of the USB-PS/2 adapter i was using with my KVM switch.

Thats what I thought.
Leave it to Microsoft to have holes in EVERY version of DirectX.

So is there a fix for all the non-DX9 cards out there.

You can search Microsoft, but I think they're only providing the DX9.0b update, part of their "upgrade your software we don't have time to support all of our previous mistakes" forward thinking.

and how about 8887s with 9000 Radeon 128? is it compatible? Or at least compatible enough to play HL2?

I assume the HT w/ DX9 existed prior to the DX9-compatible M10(-P)'s.

okay.. how about non HT enable Sagers running Radeon 9000s?
Whats this about HT not working well with DX9? I'm still contemplating whether to enable HT on my 8890 and this is important!

you can buy HT and have DX9 installed just disable HT when you are playing a game. I think thats the fix.

NOW ANSWER MY QUESTION PLEASE

HL2 COMES OUT TOMORROW and I have DX8.1 installed HL2 will only run under DX9.

SO IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH 9000 Radeons and DX9 WITHOUT HT.

DX9

Well I am still playing HL on my Dell Inspiron while waiting for my 5680 to arrive. It is old, a PIII 1.2. I installed DX9 and it runs like a champ, so I imagine that it doesn't matter what you are running, DX9 should not be a problem....
Interested in how HL2 runs, read this at Tom's, it is a review of HL2 and how it performs with different video cards and DX9. (nvidia is sucking on this one-ha ha)

still didn't answer anything about 9000 and Dx9. But thanks for letting me see the benchmarks.

Cant do that. Each time you enable/disable HT, you have to reinstall/repair XP (so it would install the appropriate kernel version).

Yes. As little as I understand it, you can have (and I had) DX9, HT, and an M9 chip\card. The M9 did not have hardware capabilities that took advantage of DX9, but the M10 does. I went back to DX8 because I was having freezes in Freelancer (which I wound up not caring for anyway) and pausing (low FPS?) in GTA III and MOHAA. I'll probably go back to DX9 eventually, though I'm very stable now running HT, DX8.1, Cat3.5 and Rage3d Tweak. I just completed SOF2 and it ran flawlessly.

I have HT Enabled with DX9 on my new 5680 (Radeon 9600) - and I've been gamining on it quite a bit the past few days.

I've had absolutly no problem, on the contrary, everything has run so smooth, so nice, and at 1600 x 1200 resolution with all the bells and wistles turned on.

So as far as their being problems with DX9 and HT, either its been fixed, or it has something to do with non-DX9 cards (like the Radeon 9000), or something to do with drivers.

I've got a 5670 with HT enabled and dx9.0b and have not had any problems at all.

HT does not cause any problems with DX9 while playing games. I have them installed on my desktops and the laptop and no problems.
