Ordering the extra 20 gigs for a huge sacrifice in performance is just dumb. THe slowest part of every computer is the HD, and people go and go lower? Storage is pathetically easy to make up...

I guess you don't know that the Seagate 100GB 5.4k HD is just about the same in terms of performance to the Hitachi 60GB 7.2K? It's also dead silent at idle and seek. So to me, why would anyone one want 40GB less storage space for just about the same real world performance?

Because you run the risk of getting a 100GB Fujitsu drive (4200rpm) which they can give you instead of the seagate.

Actually, I wasn't even thinking about ordering a 100GB from Dell since you don't know what you'd get. What I am saying is - it's best to get the cheapest HD from Dell, then just pop in your own 100GB Seagate when you get it (two screws and 1 minute is all it takes). Also that you won't necessarily loose performance as there is more to over-all drive performance than RPMs.

Yeah, that's the same thing mine said, but they still shipped me a 4200RPM drive. After yours ships, I would check to make sure they actually gave you a 5400RPM drive.

My replacement 5400RPM drive is on the way, so it will work out in the end.

I went with the 60 because it was only 29 more and I planned to replace it with the 100GB 7200 when it comes out. I already have a 2.5in Hard drive enclosure for the drive when its replaced.

Keep in mind generally hard drives that run with large amounts of cache and low RPMs have longer life spans, provide more battery life, generate less heat since its accessing the platter a lot less than those 7200 rpm drives or even the 5400 rpm drives.

When I ordered my I9300, it said both 5400 for the 60GB, however now its changed.

Now its saying all drives shipped are 4200 RPM unless you order the 7200 model.

Exact same thing for the XPS2.

Im just damn glad my invoice clearly states 5400RPM.

Dell has done this for a while now. They list all the HD's that they ship, except the 7K2 drive, as 4200rpm so that they more choices of HD's that they can purchase from different manufactures for different prices. Just take those as minimum speeds.

Then why are they invoicing people with a higher speed hard drive, shipping it with a lower, then having to ship out the faster ones? Seems to me like they should put on the invoice 4200RPM and if someone gets somthing faster good for them.

mine states 5400rpm 80gb.. i didnt take the risk of getting a 4200 100gb ..^^ i thought ill take the middleway.. 60 is to less for me as i know now

I just ordered a 700m but can't find any info about my HD.

I've checked my account and it just says it's a 40GB, # is [341-0933]

Can't find the product on their site...

Anyone know the rpm's?

You will not know until after your order ships. Mine came with a Hitachi 5400rpm 40GB though. But as you can see, I proceeded stright into replacing it with my extra 7K2 drive.
