my uncle has his own surveying business, and is in need of a new computer for his business. he's not very computer savy, and i'm helping him decide on what to get (i work for him). what do you recommend?

what brand? specs? etc?

here's what i'm thinking is the minimum:

p4 3.0ghz
1 gb ram
160 gb HD
128 mb video card

those are the main things i think he needs to worry about. what do you think? please comment.

he will be hooking up a plotter, installing and running autocad land development, other surveying/engineering software as well. he also has dsl for internet and stuff.

as far as monitor, he wants a flat panel. i'm thinking at least 17", and possibly 19". he's getting old and his eyes aren't that good anymore

yeah i've looked at dell, and they have some very good deals going.

thanks for the reply... what do you think about those specs? should they be higher to run the software?

honestly i dont know how much system resources auto cad uses. may want to get 2gig especially if all those programs are opened at once. multi tasking. someone might post a response soon who know about auto cad and how much memory system resources it uses. your hard drive size looks good and vid card. 3gigahertz should be fine. only problem i see is dell like to over charge for memory. might have to get the 256 or 512 or what ever they are offering and get your own memory at lets say newegg etc. save some bucks that way.

Why not just build the computer? You'll get a better deal that way than you will from Dell anyhow...

In this case, i might reccomend a Dell, or a HP. This is because they can provide much better customer support aimed at the less computer savvy. You might pay more, but it's for the customer support.

If you say trouble shoot yourself, then i doubt it's going to work as well as Dell will and anyway, might save yourself some time too.

i would do that, but this computer if for my uncle and he doesn't know hardly anything about computers, and i won't be there all the time b/c i'll be in college, so troubleshooting would be a problem

i agree with you, but which one to get? i've got it down to either an Alienware or a Dell? the AW is almost $1000 more, so what do you think?
