Okay, here's the thing. A month ago, I purchased a custom Hypersonic laptop. It took a month for them to build and ship it out. When it got here, there were problems galore with the DVD-RW drive (Toshiba SD-R6472). It kept stalling when-ever I tried to install an OS, failing to read files. I called in, and they sent out a replacement. The same exact thing happened, so I sent both the replacement and laptop back. A week later, they called and returned the laptop. The installation of Windows XP Pro went fine, but now there are other problems. The DVD-RW drive keeps vanishing at odd times, and I can't seem to track a certian cause. Other times, it appears, but is registered as a CD-RW. There is one unknown device listed in the Manager, and I can't get anything on it except the location: on PCI standard ISA bridge. Can anyone offer advice, or has had similiar experiance?

Sounds like a drivers issue, but if you've reinstalled pro and the drivers, it may be hardware.

I assume you've deleted the unknown device and allowed Windows to reinstall?

Yes, and today I've gotten two diffrent upgraded firmware files, tested both, and got the same result. One reported an error, but did not say what it was, and still seemed to work. Called tech support.. again, and the unknown device is more then likely Infared, the one thing I've never been able to get working on any laptop. It's been deleted twice, and reinstalled using the same default Microsoft driver, to no avail. I am looking into getting a regular DVD-reader/ CD-RW drive in place of this faulty DVD-RW/CD-RW setup

Make sure DMA is enabled. Try resetting the BIOS to default settings also.
