Using the information provided in the previous posts to this thread (thank you all!) I've been able to get a gentoo system installed, however, I'm unable to get X to come up and the Xorg.log file indicates this generic error:
(EE) No devices detected
I ran lspci and notice the following:
[root@sith ~]# lspci | grep ATI
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unkown device 5d4a

I've recompiled my kernel (2.6.10-gentoo-r6) a number of times thinking that maybe I'm screwing up on one of the selections in the config. Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be a great help. Thanks again!
I am having the same trouble. When I say "emerge ati-drivers" in gentoo, the fglrx module is not added as it should be. I look at my dmesg output and it says "[fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!" .. I was trying to follow the instructions in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml and also in http://www.gmpf.de/index.php/Installation:ATI-en ...

Please, if anyone has gotten this stuff to work, help us out! There's no info on the wiki or anywhere that I can find..

Here's my lspci output (As you see, I have no AGP listed, is that a problem?)

I found a thread in forums.gentoo.org that may explain the problem:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...0-start-0.html

It says that perhaps my chipID is different than the one defined in the ATI driver. So, I will try and hexedit the fglrx.ko file as they say on page 2 of the forum..

Has anyone else had this same problem? (I don't want to waste a lot of time trying to hexedit this thing if this is not what the problem is..)

Thanks,
Ben

Thanks for the information...I downloaded the latest ATI driver version (8.12.10) and I only have it partly working...I'm using yoper-2.2-6 with a customized 2.6.11.7 kernel...Using your suggestion of the ChipID 0x5d48 (the real ID, per lspci is listed as: Unknown device 5d4a) I am able to get X to run...however...only in 2D mode...the fglrx_drv.o builds fine in the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers location, however, the kernel module fails to build. Below is the output I get if anyone has any ideas on what is causing this...I also used some information found at http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/g...1_whichversion & http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...0-start-0.html
to help get this going.

Well, after several attempts I finally got 3D Acceleration working on my Sager 9860 running Linux. I'm currently using yoper linux 2.2 BETA, however, I expect this would work in Gentoo as well since most of the Information I got to resolve this came from Gentoo forums (which I also have run on this laptop and plan to again soon)...Anyway, this is what I had to do:

Here are the specific links which helped me to get this working:
http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/g...1_whichversion
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...-start-25.html
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/iii/?i=1002
http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/g...tml#4_nodevice

0) I installed the lastest Binary driver releast from ATI using their GUI tool: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/at...er-8.14.13.run
1) I downloaded the "fglrx_binary_edit.tar.bz2" tool from this url: http://members.lycos.co.uk/wedge_ant...y_edit.tar.bz2
2) I extracted this tool into my home directory and it creates a directory called: fglrx_binary_edit. I changed to that directory and ran "make". If all goes well it creates a binary called: fglrx_binary_edit
3) I then copied the "libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3" from /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/ and then ran the fglrx_binary_edit binary with the following options: ./fglrx_binary_edit 5653 5d4a
NOTE: the 5d4a is the ID that shows up in my lspci output and the 5653 is the PCI ID for the X700 which IS supported by the binary ATI driver release.
3.5) Copy the modified libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3 back to it's original location. Then cd to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod and the execute the make.sh script. Then cd .. and execute the make_install.sh. If all goes well there will be no errors.
4) A "modprobe fglrx" resulted in the module loading successfully!!
5) I then updated my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and modified the line:
ChipID 0x5653 in the "Device" Section.
I replaced "vesa" with fglrx in this same section as well. I've included a snip below.
6) I then logged out and restarted X and it works! My FPS went from at best 700/sec previously running glxgears to between 4600-4600/sec! Also the fgl_glxgears program which (obviously) wouldn't run before, now does and shows an average FPS of about 900/sec.
