Should I disconnect the battery or not?

Thread Starter
I use my Sager Notebook for anything between 3-6hrs a day. During all of this time it is powered from the AC adaptor. I rarely disconnect the AC adaptor. Should I disconnect the battery? (as I rarely move it). I read a thread something about preserving the battery life from constant charging--I know a battery subjected to continuious power will degrade the cells.

Bump...

I'm very interested in this question as well...is it best to remove the battery? I just got my 9860...so should I charge/discharge the battery a few times to break it in, then start removing it from the system when it is plugged in...which it will be for most of its life.

Ditto the bump. Mine's removed at the moment, but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do. I'll probably use the battery only twice a year. I hate to think it's in there just festering for 6 months at a time, all lonely with nothing to do.

The impression I got during the numerous conversations regarding the batteries is that the cells do degrade after time if constantly plugged into A/C. The trouble with removing the battery completely is that if there were a glitch in the power supply, or the connection got knocked out, even for just a second, the machine would shut off instantly.

The suggestion was (and what I've been doing) to cycle the batteries every once in a while - ie, use them. Even if you're at your desk in the same place, every once in a while (2-3 times a week), unplug it and let it drop down to 30-40% and then plug back in. There were suggestions of letting it completely drain and then fully recharge again, but there were also a handful of people disagreeing with that, so I never really knew what to believe.

Search the forums because this topic has been talked about quite a few times. Or dig up some research on lithium ion batteries.

There is one drawback with leaving the battery out. . . you lose one of the leveling feet.
