Yes but I don't think it will allow a fresh install. You would first have to first instal Panther to upgrade to Tiger. Even though that's not as big a deal as upgrading Windows OS's I still much prefer a clean install.

I don't believe Apple offers an "upgrade" version like Microsoft does. I don't recall seeing one, at least. If they did, it would probably be as simple as inserting your Panther disk when it asks for proof of a previous version...like Windows does, or used to do if they stopped.

I think that is a great deal. Why wait when You can get a mac now and enjoy it, then update later for only $10? Classic.

you can certainly do a fresh install with teh cd. no problems.

From what I have heard about he Mac OS installs is that there are a few options. One is an upgrade which just installs all the new features. What I have heard about this, from people using panther, is that all your old settings and preferences are the same. Another is the full install which gets rid of everything. I think there is one more but i don't know what it is.

There are 3 install options for OS X.

Erase and install which formats the drive and does a fresh install.

Archive and install which makes a copy of your old system folder and installs a new one then copies over any essential files from your old system folder.

And then Upgrade, which is just what it says.

I have the Panther up2date discs that Apple shipped. It will do any of the above install types, but ONLY if it sees Jaguar installed on a hard drive first. So a clean install of Panther for me would mean:

1. Install Jaguar off the Powerbook restore DVD
2. Boot to Panther CD 1, select Erase and Install, and install OS
3. Put in Jaguar Restore DVD for classic and other apps.

It is likely to be similar with the Tiger up2date kit, where it must see a Panther install somewhere, but will allow a clean install.

Correct ... and UPTODATE Upgrade DVD would have that functionality... However In this Case... Tiger will be changing a few things about install Though. =)
