Sending Latitude X1 back

Well as you know I have been bragging about my new x1 and posted pics in the pics section. Well after a few days of playing with it, performance wise, I am very dissappointed.

The mouse issue I thought that I solved was not solved but merely glossed over. I fixed the thing where the top third of the mouse not registering any movement by increasing the sensitivity, which allowed the top part to feel my finger. But, it still was a huge step back in sensitivity as compared to the bottom part. So it is like their was a prob. with the top part making it a big step less sensitive in the first place, I mean I could not even get it to respond by forcefully pressing down. So problem not really fixed since it is still uneven in sensitivity. By lowering the total sensitivity of the touchpad, the top part would now only respond to normal mov't pressure and nothing lighter, while the bottom part would respond to a feather rubbing it...literally.

2nd issue I talked about previously here was that my power adapter was getting EXTREMELY hot and buzzing loudly.

I called Dell and they wanted me to talk to tech support, etc., who just told me to install drivers, etc. all of which I had done. They would replace my ac adapter, but since my touchpad was "working" they wouldn't do a system replacement. I then said that I'll just return it then, and then they agreed to do the replacement, but I had been fed up by now, so I am just sending it back after hours on the phone going nowhere. And supposedly SB Customer service and maybe tech support had been said to be in US, but neither of the depts I talked to were.

Aside from the above, I just don't think this is worth the price. Don't get me wrong, it LOOKS great as I said in my initial reports, but for the price, the 700m gets the job done better while saving a grand.

Other issues: I have had no prior experience with ULV, so maybe I was mistaken, but I thought they could do normal surfing activities. This thing jittered while playing a movie back I had taken with my digital camera movie feature. The 700m whizzed through this same video with no problem. The X1 also jitters on some streaming internet videos that the 700m whizzes through. Also even during the loading of a heavy web page, if you try to move your mouse pointer to a button that has already appeared even though the page is not completely loaded, the arrow will lag behind, and then over correct, and go all over the screen. Like I said, I have not had any experience with the ULV's, but thought it could handle the above tasks, esp. with the newer video. But in these tasks, the 700m spanks the X1.

The screen, which I once reported as crisp, has a poor viewing angle or contrast. To see certain light colored or back ground text, the screen has to be pushed WAY back, as in opened further.

I love the look of the laptop, but with the above disappointments, I am sending both mine and my wife's back. We will stick with the 700m's, and I may even spend the money I spent on one X1 and put towards a 9300/xps2

Sorry for the rant.

I just received mine today. So far I am very impressed. I'll hold off though on a final opinion until I've had a chance to use it for a few days.

You have a dud. Since you said in a previous post that your wife's X1 is OK you must realize that. It happens...it just sucks when it's you. I've been there.

My power adapters (I have three) seem to be OK. There is a faint buzz from the adapter when under load (i.e. charging the battery), but no more so than the buzz from my four other Dell adapters. Speaking of which my older Dell adapters (the new rounded style) won't work with the X1. The X1's adapter is not round but rather octagon. Thanks Dell.

Aside from the above, I just don't think this is worth the price. Don't get me wrong, it LOOKS great as I said in my initial reports, but for the price, the 700m gets the job done better while saving a grand.

The 700m is a great machine. I had one for a while and you really can't beat the features for the price. Having said that the X1 and 700m don't compare. They aren't meant to be lumped together in the same category. As stupid as it may sound the X1 belongs in the less is more category (less computer for more $$). Same goes for the Sony X505, Pany W2 and R3, Tosh R100, etc. You get a lot of bang for the buck when you add everything up on the 700m.

Other issues: I have had no prior experience with ULV, so maybe I was mistaken, but I thought they could do normal surfing activities. This thing jittered while playing a movie back I had taken with my digital camera movie feature. The 700m whizzed through this same video with no problem. The ULV is not quite a 2GHz PM, but it's not too shabby. I d/l some HD video from the Windowsmedia site just to check out my X1 (after reading your comments). You must have something wrong with your system. I played back 720p video full screen with no hitches. The only thing more taxing than that is 1080i which did stutter on my X1, but that is to be expected. M$ recommends a 3GHz processor to playback 1080i! Do you have a bunch of stuff running in the background? Maybe your antivirus is bogging you down? I'm running Trend Micro while playing back the video without any problems. How much memory are you running? I have 1.2GB so I have some to spare. Dunno why your system is running so slow.

The screen, which I once reported as crisp, has a poor viewing angle or contrast. To see certain light colored or back ground text, the screen has to be pushed WAY back, as in opened further.

Compared to the 700m you're going to be disappointed. I was kinda hoping that the X1 would include a high contrast screen, but it doesn't. It does have something similar to an Ultrasharp screen. The X1's screen would work better in the work environment where you tend to have bright lighting. The 700m's screen would have alot of glare. The X1's screen is just a hair below the quality (as far as viewing angle is concerned) of my 15" Powerbook. It's good...just not spectacular.

I love the look of the laptop, but with the above disappointments, I am sending both mine and my wife's back. We will stick with the 700m's, and I may even spend the money I spent on one X1 and put towards a 9300/xps2

Best of luck. Better pump some iron before you lug the XPS around.

Sorry for the rant.

I see what you are saying on your points, but my wife's computer jumps and jitters on the same exact videos. Nothing running in background, etc. I never had a 2.0ghz 700m but only a 1.6 700m, and figured that the x1 could do what it could do. But my x1's couldn't, but it sounds like you got a good one. It is a great looking laptop, and would have been a great laptop overall if mine didn't have all of the problems, and either of ours could play a simple video. I just had a horrible experience maybe. Oh, well, I'll stick with the 700m for my ultra portable needs.

It would have been more tempting if it would have retained some of the features that the Samsung Sens Q30 (which this system is a rebadged version of) had.

* "TrueLife" or similar display (at least as an option)

* 2 stereo speakers, Samsung Sens Q30 has them and in the X1 service manual there is a big gap where that speaker should have gone

* 1.2Ghz ULV P-M (at least as an option)

* Optional external drive of the Samsung Sens Q30 (which is superslim compared to the D-Bay drive of the Latitudes external drive).

And for $1699 before discounts this would have been a slamming ultra-portable. Maybe Dell can release this as it's Inspiron equivalent as they did when they released the Inspiron 300m and Latitude X300

Wait so the Dell X1 has a non-glossy screen while the original Samsung Q30 has the better one?

The X1 doesn't have a glossy screen. It has a traditional matte finish. Although matte the display looks like a Dell Ultrasharp screen. It has good color saturation and viewing angles. Just not up to levels of the newer glossy screens. BTW, glossy isn't necessarily better. Glossy screens are good for personal use and viewing movies. The X1 is not meant to be a multimedia device but rather a business machine. The glossy screens don't play well in outside world. Say you're in an airport trying to knock out the final touches of a presentation. If you're in a brightly lite terminal (especially with windows) you'll have a hard time seeing your work. If you need color accuracy glossy screens are not your first choice either.

Just as a comparison. The X1's screen looks better than the screens all of it's competitors (X505, W2, R3, R100, etc.).

Just for record, adding to the x1 display discussion.
From a German review I know that the contrast is 90:1 (not graet) and the brightness is 170 cd/m^2 (good enough). Samsung Q30 has the brightness up to 250 cd/m^2.

jsl-pt,

I was eyeing Latitude X1 and then I found your post. Some people on other boards say it is a buyer remorse, but after reading carefully I've decided on 700m.
