lol im just an idiot. I pressed the top button and it popped out slightly I thought it was just another tab u push in to remove a card like the pcmcia thing. I didnt realize that it was actually a dummy media card u pull out and then insert ur own SM. lol.

I guess the 3 in 1 media reader doesnt include the ability to read Smart Media Cards unless Im missing something. Wow thats a let down...(

I had no issues with it reading my SD memory cards by SanDisk

The Area-51m makes plug and play easy. Enjoy your favorite pictures, photos, video clips, and data using the Area-51m’s 3-in-1 built-in media card reader. (MMC/SD/MS formats)

I dont understand. My Smart Media disk is physically too big to fit into that tiny slot. Smartmedia is Smart media wtf am I not understanding. The little plastic thing that pops out of the media reader is barely half the size of my Smartmedia disk. What gives?

MMC = MULTIMEDIA CARD

MS = MEMORY STICK

SD = SECURE DIGITAL

pricewatch lists smart media separately from these other 3. I don't think its compatible.

i assume smart media is the big "old style" compact flash that many digital cameras still use.

the IBM microdrives (the multi gigabyte ones) use the same formfactor and interface so they probably wont work either!

If that is the case,t hen I wont be able to use the cards from my camera, which would suck (but i have a usb cable,a nd a usb card reader,so it wouldn;'t suck too much)

You assume wrongly.

Compact flash is compact flash. Smart media is smart media. Smart media resembles a larger version of SD.

As long as the reader will take TypeI/II compact flash, ANY CF will work...

Divine is correct. Which kind of sucks.

yes, a quick google shows me my error.

anyway, does it take compact flash? the formats it clearly takes are all smaller than compact flash - does it have a large compact flash slot as well?

Nope we are out of luck. The media this baby reads are those ultra tiny ones.

it reads my sd cards but they hang out half way out of the slot and still works

how about XD? my camera has Xd, but my PDA has SD card in it so as long as one of those is supported I'll be ok.

adaptor for the "big" slot...

I was reading this thread and realized that my Epson Stylus Photo 825 came with a nifty adaptor that allows you to use all three types of cards.It slips into the PCI slot, and allows you to use what ever of the three media type cards you may have.

I'm sure this adaptor is available at any PC outlet.

It works perfectly with my Area51.

Anyway this is an old thread so I doubt anyone cares....

I have an xD camera too, xD is not supported and the card does not physically fit in the slot so we're outta luck.

Well, I feel that xD is the least supported of this media. Its a really tiny card, and those photo printing stations have a separate xD reader from the other media.

I just bought the Olympus C750-Ultra Zoom last week that also uses the xD card. I was looking at the Olympus website and saw that they have an adapter for sale so you can use your memory card in these devices.
