Windows XP 64 bit

Anyone in on the Beta test? Some rumors have it being released late April (why do I feel the need to put 2005 here with MS's history of delays?). I have been waiting for this OS to upgrade my desktop, looks like I need to start saving the cash.

I found a pretty good review posted Apr 4th (05) here:

Any personal experiences from you guys?

It's RTM (release to manufacturers), consumers should be able to get it soon.

im gonna wait for more patches to come out with hardware before i upgrade. there is to much hardware out there that hasnt upgraded to wind 64os yet.

I had heard a rumor that they would upgrade users free if they owned XP already, and truth in that comment?

MaxPC had an article in the May issue that confirms this. You have to have XP Pro, and you have to give up your Pro license to get the X64 license.

Interesting, slap me and call me Susan.

btw, I know The Inquirer has good info from time to time but I would take everything they put out with a grain of salt. For every piece of info they hit I bet they miss on 2 or more.

Case in point : Best Buy will start buying Clevo barebones systems and offer a BestBuy branded laptop. This was on their site just after the HP Compaq merger but I cannot seem to find a BB clevo anywhere ...

Don't worrie if you don't get it right away, we have it in our test lab and the only advantage is the expanded memory cap. Other than tha, nada, zip zilch. Buy it when you see the first 64bit games hit the shelves.

Another tid bit is the fact that it runs legacy apps in compatability mode, at last Microsoft found a new way to make your existing programs even moe unstable than before.

The RTM version is already at SP1. The core of the OS has actually been out for quite some time. It is a lot server 2003 with a different GUI.

As for hardware, it's no so much a matter of the hardware itself supporting the OS, as it is the manufacturers writing drivers.
