I'll get her at least 512 for sure.

I don't think she'll go Mac. About 8 years ago, she LOVED Macs, but her work made her go PC, and my mom HATES change, but it was work so she had to learn it. Now she is used to them, and is back the hating change again! I will mention it again, but the chances are VERY low.

without getting in to OS comparisms here I will say that I have never ever known of a mac to fail. They tend to be very reliable.

Just build her one. It is very easy to build a desktop these days, even with OEM parts. You'll save her a bundle and when she ****s it up (which she invariably will) you will know all of the components intimately and it'll be easier to fix it.

LOL, those Mac comics are funny! I've known a couple dudes like that. The only thing they talk about more than how everybody should have one is how they're pissed because they can't get the software they want! lol. I think a Mac would be great for my mom, but like I said, chances are slim she'll try it.

I do like Dell's 4 year on-site plan. Thats the kind of stuff I'm lookin for. Has anybody had to use it? Any experiances to share?

My parents have used it on their desktops. Very efficient/fast.

Make sure you get a $800 off coupon or something similar if you get a Dell.

don't get her a mac, it will confuse her. and if you are not lucky with a stable mac, you'll have to be sending it in every other month for a new mobo or hard drive.

i say go dell with on-site service when you get a good coupon.

avoid HP/Compaq at all costs...their tech support sucks ass bad!

eMachines and Gateway = see HP/Compaq

Sony = too expensive and underpowered

Online Stores = no on-site service

Ever thought of just getting service from geek squad?

Jesus christ, how many times does it have to be beat into your head abf? Very few Macs, no more than any other company, have problems.

And learning a new operating system will be confusing at first for anyone used to another one, but luckily Windows and OS X are fundamentally the same in how their interfaces work.

A couple months ago I recommended a Mac to a 60+ year old woman who doesn't know anything about computers and who has only ever used Windows. She got an iBook and she loves it the more she uses it.

Geek squad says, to honor the warranty and follow policy, they have to send it to e-machines for 2-3 weeks. If we want to IGNORE the warranty, and PAY them, they will fix it in the store...... This is why I'm not happy with their policy at all. They say if it was a peripheral, like the cd-rom, they would fix it at the store, but if it is "the computer" (motherboard, CPU, RAM) it's gotta go out. This would be true for every brand they sell, not just e-machines. So I asked, "Then what exactly did we pay $99 for?" They said, "Because the repair will be free".....I know it's gonna be the motherboard, and $99 is certainly more than this motherboard costs. Lame.

I backed up the hard drive today, so we can send out now, regardless of wheather or not she buys another machine.
