ACER out to commit suicide in US

Acer is out to wipe itself out in US. They have a foolish product manager who think notebook buyers are fools. We used to hold their company in high regard,
but the crappy product launch made us think Acers should not be looked at for good config/price combination. Look at the crappy Video card on a Turion. The product manager should be fired. If they have to compete to the likes of Gateway or Averatec.

They should have known that people going for AMD products are people who look for more for less.....dont go after brand names.......have guts to buy the best ......

I dont know how do Acer dare to introduce a world class processor lappie with a crappy video card ( Only to spoil their Image). Same with HP.

Gateway and Averatec seems to understand the market ( at least little bit)

There is a version coming out with an X700 GPU.

As with all of the Acer range because we can't phone them up and order a laptop with certain specs, they instead build lots of variations of models to suite how much people can afford.

The thing that bothers me is the fact the screen is XGA on even the X700 model! I am guessing that is something that won't be changed over the variations of acers turion models soon to come. Hope im wrong as that really is a big waste.. XGA screens really need to be phased out by now.

Time will tell! But going from the turion benchmarks ive seen im not all that impressed with its 32bit handling.

I think you're a bit confused there buddy. First of all, as their laptops are not customizable, it's a GOOD thing that they're introducing a Turion laptop with crap graphics. Not everyone enjoys playing games, hell, before I bought my 8104 the only games I played were on consoles. The X700 has opened my eyes to all these new games, but I was willing to pay a premium for it. The Turion is being billed as a budget option to Sonoma, so why not have a few options? The X700 Turion is coming, don't worry.

HP spoiling their image? When did they have a positive image? The company blows, plain and simple. Compaq was arguably worse, but now that the company has merged they just exist as one shitstorm of a company that churns out bulky, ugly (and wow are they ugly notebooks), massmarket laptops that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. Avaratec, whatever, they just give me the impression all they make are budget workstations that are stable yet underperform compared to some of the bigger guns. Sony has great style, almost rivaling that of Apple, but you want to talk about dumb product managers? How long have they had 4200 RPM harddrives in their machines? And they're SO damn overpriced, it's ridiculous. When their precious FS line is getting crap reviews from even the sheep website that is CNET, you know something's wrong. IBM makes quality stuff, and so does Dell, as long as you get a good discount. Personally, I'd never buy a Dell again, as my i8100 purchased in 2001 never went a day without giving me a headache. My TM 8104? I love it, and has given me no problems.

Now, I wouldn't completely disaree with you that their product manager is foolish, but the company certainly isn't dumb. The 8104 is arguably the best fusion of thin and light technology and desktop replacement technology, and is a blazing fast, cutting edge machine that can compete with ANYTHING in its category when it comes to bechmarks and system performance. The battery lasts about four hours, I can play Half-Life 2 on the highest settings, it's very portable for its size, what else do you want? Sure, their exposure is CRAP and they didn't get any press whatsoever on the 8100 series and that was a mistake, as it should have been reviewed in CNET, PCWORLD, etc. Instead, word of mouth has brought it to where it is today, but it's sad considering the beast it could have been. Think about the Dell i6000. For awhile, it was the only Sonoma offered by Dell, and it got a LOT of press. What graphics card did it have? None. Integrated, crap, video RAM. Now they have a few better options, but are any of them portable? Nope. The Acer 8104 is still a competitively priced powerhouse, and I'm sure the Turion Acer will continue the trend in the next few months. Be patient, and you'll have your Turion w/X700 card.

http://www.prixdunet.com/details/Acer_Aspire_5024WLMi/

available in 7 days in France, when will it be in the US? this doesnt make sense.
If you call the Acer America presales information number (1-800-571-2237), they're saying the 5024wlmi will not be released in the US. It's an international model only.

Give me a lead pipe and point me to the direction of an Acer sales manager.
that sucks, oh well. I can wait a few months before I need to get a laptop... hopefully something comparable comes out... maybe Gateway will release that Arima with the x700.

Well, I need a laptop before I start college this fall, and I'd really like to get a machine with an AMD rather than an Intel, but I'm afraid that if Acer (or someone) doesn't hurry up I'm going to have to "settle" for an 8104.
