Cheap Processor Upgrade? - Page 7

Where will you be able to get DDR2 SODIMMS that fast? Unless you can change the multiplier.
the question of ddr2 isnt even the question. the bios needs to knwo what to do with those bsel0/1 combinations.

got my 1.7ghz dothan, i hope to have better luck with it

I'll post my results later today or tomorrow.

Toy-yoda, you have to post your results tonight! I must know ASAP!

My bet they were put in there for the Yonah processors.

One question guys.. when you guys "Upgrade" the clock speed to 533 from 400..
what is ur memory speeed?

I am thinking that for the 715 system, they would use DDR II -400MHZ...
if you are clocking to 533FSB. wouldn't that be in conflict with your memory Clock speed too????

that would help to explain y 1.7 .. 735 can't be clocked... because the guy's system is not using DDRII-533 memory in the lappie and Dell Bios got very confused... and clock the "Memory" up to 533... therefore with the crash...

Please advice guys.. what memory speed are you guys using?

Ok, I'm done. It didnt work. Prime95 failed very quickly after 10 seconds, so I have it back to the original config. I may try again w/ a 1.6 but ONLY after I see someone else do it before me. I refuse to increase the voltage to this thing. The cooling on it is pretty weak, imo.

Sorry guys, I know some of you were hoping it would be this easy

edit - anyone want a 1.7ghz dothan, lightly used

Also, I must say taking apart this thing was easy. Easiest laptop I have worked with by far. I even had to reset the pinmod once to get it right and I still did it under an hour.

Yo Toy-yoda I presume that your memory is 533?

correct, but its running @ 400
Guys.. that is what I am talking about..
it is the memory that is the source of the clocking issue I think

From what you guys are reporting, it doesn't sound like not enough power to the CPU... it sounds like overclocking memory failures... at least I believe
(Trying to give myself a ray of hope, got a refub 9300 with a 2.0 in it.. )

CPUZ lies on the memory speed. Check the bois.
My 6000's fsb speed changed from 400 to 533 after the oc but the memory stayed at 400. The 6000 came with DDR2 3200 not 4200.

Too lazy to look back.. urs was a 1.5 => 2.0 right?
I dont think memory speed is the issue. My stock 9300 is a PM1.6 (533FSB) with 533Mhz memory. When I ground BSEL on the PM1.7 (400FSB) to get it to 533FSB, the 9300 sees it as a PM2.26 (533FSB). The memory speed has not been tinkered with.
so who will be the next guinea pig? So far we have confirmed that the 1.5 pinmod works, but the 1.7 does not. Anyone try the 1.6?
sorry to hear 1.7 to 2.26 didnt go too well. i wonder if dell uses a different heatpipe system for the 2.13ghz ones.

sure the cpus go through the speed binning process but the results still have a fair buffer.

and no, memory is not the issue. the i915 chipset can utilize a memory divider to have fsb be 133 and ram be 200 (3:2 setting).

edit: i have to admit, this is not too great of news in terms of overclocking the other cpus. i guess they can't go far above 2.0.

i've had two 1.5->2.0's and can say that on one of them, the max vid i need at full load is less than the other one. it's a shame i had to return that one
post #137 of 754
Woohoo! I think It's working! I think I have a 2.26ghz CPU in my 9300! Prime95 has been running without errors for almost 5 minutes and the CPU is right at 60C.

The key is to ground vid3 (put a wire that bridges G3 and H3). Yah, I know I SAID I tried that and it failed. The problem was that I forgot to twist the lock mechanism on the CPU socket this last time. So the system shut itself down to prevent damage. I noticed it was unlocked when I took the system apart to put the old PM1.6 back in. So I thought... "Well, Im pretty good and taking this thing apart and putting it back together... Let's try it one more time... "

BOOYAH! I have the fastest 9300/XPS2 in existance at this moment! I am Dah Man!

P.S. Im typing on the 9300 while prime95 is running. The CPU has dropped to 57C. Prime95 has just passed test 1300.

awesome. congrats.

ill never do it unless my 2.0ghz/2gb gets tapped out...but its fun watching you guys.
Stomper, do you mean add an extra wire to G3 and H3 as well as BSEL[0]?

What does this do? Increase voltage? What is the current voltage?
Where exactly on these processors are you adding the wires?
