Cheap Processor Upgrade? - Page 4

also, could someone with a real pm 760 (2.0) chime in with what their default vcore is? because if it's the same as that of the pm 715 (1.5), there's no reason at all why an overclocked 715 would be any different at all from a 760. and if dell uses the same heatsink, then it should function in that respect identically as well.

and if the vcore on the 760 is higher than that of the 715, then more power to you! you have a cooler running 760 and itll have longer batt life than a true 760, and it should be stable still. intel puts a lot of buffer into these.

So is this a yes or no...could this mod be done with a Dothan with i855PM?

I'm less inclined to think so. And besides, you're trying your pm755?? that would land the overclock onto 2.66ghz, which i dont see being very likely anyway, unfortunately.

But if you can find out more details about the BCLK pins...

To anyone that is interested here is the pinout diagram with the pins circled in red that need to be connected.

Ahh, your just jealous because you splurged on a $600 processor.

Hey Ramit, is that diagram specific to certain chipsets or is that my diagram also (755 with i855PM)? Where did you find that?

and um, how do we connect those circled pins again?

That is a diagram looking at the socket. The link takes you to the spec. page for the 533 dothan based processors.

Intel link

Thanx for your time!

just have to keep asking until you get the answer you want eh?

i believe only the i915 reads the bsel pins. i dont even know if any 855's support 533fsb. i recall some did, but if they did, i hear they used the bclk pins.

you can definitely feel free to try the pinmod though. i may very well be wrong. no harm in trying

Take a very fine piece of stranded copper wire about 3/16" long.
Bend it into a u and drop it into the socket @ c15 and c16.

I'm not looking for the answer I want to hear, but will use multiple resources before making my final decision.

yep. if you dont mind, an easy place to find this would be by cutting up some electrical wire for say a lamp or something. you'll find perfect wire in there.

also, use tweezers. after trying for about an hour by hand, i finally resorted to tweezers and got them in there in 30 seconds. then use your finger and push it in and youre good to go

Okay, do I just lighly bend the wire around those two pins without actually bending the pins?

NO, put the wire into the socket. It would be VERY hard to wrap those pins on the processor. I felt like a weight lifter trying to do brain sugery just getting the wire into the socket.

How in the crap do I put the wire in the socket? WHen I drop the CPU in, won't it move the wire?

Will this work on a 735? supposedly right? since it works on the 715?

Does changing the CPU void the warranty from Dell?

Doubtfull, but pin modding for sure will.

I'm assuming if you ever need to return your laptop to Dell for warranty service, you can easily remove the "u" piece of wire, reseat the processor and be on your way.
