But it would boot up and work fine in the c56...so I guess I have an odd pin mod, but at least I'm running @ 2.0GHZ now :-).
last time i checked, there wasn't such a thing as a c56, and if ur talking about cl56 i don't think it has a 915 chipset

Could someone run CrystalCPUID to verify that 400MHz and 533MHz all have NX disabled-bit ?

Because i've just seen an article on xbitlabs, they claimed that 533MHz has NX bit.
Here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...umm-780_8.html

Edit:
Forget it, i found out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M
Besides FSB increase, intel add NX bit to Sonoma platform. Therefore, you lost NX bit when use 400MHz chip.

NX is really nothing more than a novelty at this point. Hardly needed, I have it disabled on my 660.

Oops I meant CL56, and I never said it has a 915 chipset. The processor inside, however is a Dothan @ 1.5GHZ so I was able to pin mod the processor that it had(pinmodded the i9300 not the cl56).

NX bit - what does it all mean Basil? (in a nutshell and in plain Engrish too thx)

NX bit is the "No Execute" bit. It tells the CPU that code is not meant to be executed in order to prevent viruses and worms. Unfortunatly there isn't much software support for it yet so at present it's a mostly useless feature.

It is also mostly useless for those of us who are security contious anyway. Nice to have but not a deal breaker by any means if you don't. Definetly not a reason to not pin-mod.

Oh, no! I lost a basically useless feature! j/k

This has worked well for me!
System is a lot faster crunching F@H.
Sold my 760 on ebay for $300.

I think I am going to try a 745 just to see if it will work at default voltage.

Thanks for the simple explanation . Now I don't feel so bad being NX-less

s00t! bought the 1.6ghz dothan for 150, sold the sonoma for 180

Are there any barebones laptops that use the 915 chipset? I looked briefly and only found the 855 chipset, which I understand wont work. I am no expert, but seems like you could build a whitebox custom for about $400 cheaper using this method. Hoping to pinmod this weekend!!!! If my proc arrives in time.

Just thought I'd add a tale of my new Dothan 1.7. Following the advice here I tried to do the 1.7 -> 2.26 upgrade and can't get a stable setup at 17x and 1.34V. Seems like some like Reaver have had success at even lower voltages. 16x works fine even down at 1.292v (haven't tried lower yet). I'm not up for any more pin mods for now, so I guess I will live with 2.13 for now.

Thanks for the great thread and special thanks for personal assistance from Reaver.

Mine's doing 2.26GHz at 1.324V, but the temp under full load ranges between 63 and 67. I also get ocassional surges past 70C, which cause the CPU fan to kick into noisy high speed until 10C is shaved off. Normally, I don't give a toss about temps, as long as the overclock is stable, but 15C more than what I was getting at 2GHz AND ocassional high speed fan is a bit more of a concern. 2.13GHz @ 1.260V with 62C max is a happy compromise.

Weird. I never can get it above 59C even at 2.26 at 1.34V (but it is unstable there). You use AS5 during the upgrade? That stuff is pretty freakin' amazing.

Am I to guess right, that the best source for instructions on pin modding and/or overclocking is on the first page?

Why dont you read the whole thing so you can get the full picture on the pros and cons of doing this mod.
It might be a good or bad thing depending on what you use your computer for.
