Cheap Processor Upgrade? - Page 34

Thanks! I just wanted to point out there is PROBABLY a way out also for 855GME though not so straightforward.

Does the tweak discussed here mean that one can just
purchase a Sonoma platform notebook barebone with i915 chipset
(like MSI S260) and a cheap PM 715 processor and have a Sonoma 2GHz laptop
for smth like 250 $ (or euros, in Europe) less?

Wow, great thread guys, and congrats to everyone who has had success with this mod. I myself have an i6000 that I am planning on pin modding. After reading the entire thread (phew... but worth every page), I haven't seen many attempts to upgrade the 6000. Has anyone had any luck with any processors faster than the 725 in their 6000's? I'm not sure how the cooling assembly in the 6000 stacks up against that of the 9300. What would you suggest as the max. processor to throw into my lappy for pinmodding?

Also, has anyone contemplated that the BIOS revision you're running might have something to do with the inconsistencies of higher voltage with using the 735 @2.26GHz? I've seen someone had theirs undervolted under max load at 1.210v stable, and others seem to have stability issues with the same processor using max default voltage. Not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, but I'm sure you guys will figure it out

thats probably just luck of the draw with the chips. Some simply overclock better than others.

Thought I'd update with the thread with another successful 1.7 -> 2.26 mod.
Super PI: 1M 35.25 seconds, 2M 1min 32 seconds

I did 1.7 -> 2.26 pinmod today, it's working great.

Just so you guys know, Prime95 stable doesnt mean its stable. Try running games, like HL2 and FarCry for hours. I wouldnt recommend undervolting the cpu, because it can kill it. I know from experience....

Undervolting can kill procy?

There seems to be quite the competition for 1.6 and 1.7Ghz P-M's on ebay.
Sadly, Im probably competeing with all of you for one of these!

I ended up getting a 1.8 for less than several people paid for their 1.6's and 1.7's. Just isn't the demand for the 1.8's. I put the 1.8 in my i8600 and then used the 1.6 that was in the i8600 in my i9300. Gotta love that free market economy.

Didnt you even try the 1.8 in the 9300?

Well, I had a celeron a overclocked, thinking it was stable and for a month I was getting errors. When I tried going back to the original settings, it only helped but the cpu was still unstable. That was first experience with overclocking too.

I had an Athlon 64 that was primed95 stable @ 2.5ghz, and I used as litle voltage as I could get away with. Then I installed FarCry and it wouldnt run. I thought it was a video card error but adding more voltage or decreasing the clock speed fixed the problem.

My GeForce 4200 DIED from overclocking, yet again I didnt know enough. I was still new to the overclocking scene and thought that since everyone else could get 4600 speeds, so could I. Logically it made sense, in powerstrip I was still in the green zone, so I thought it was safe. I even had light artifacts, but didnt even know what they were. I just thought they were bugs in the game. Six months later my card died.

Just be carefull and make sure that your system is completely stable. Im not undervolting just to be on the safe side, and I keep my video overclocks very mild now. I want this laptop to last me three years too.

Alright so i haven't posted for a while. I decided to buy a 700m. Being the tweak addict I am, I had it completely taken apart in two days. My goal was to put the 755 from my 9300 in the 700m, and take the 745 I ordered with the 700m into the 9300 and run it at 2.4.

I was at the time still running stable with the 9300, and in fact was very happy with it at 2.53, with one exception: If I was not running software to downclock the chip, my computer was not 100% stable. I was not happy with this so I decided to change it.

I was frustrated to find out that I still needed to ground vid4 with the 745 in the 9300 to work properly. In fact, both vid4 and vid0 need to be grounded with my machine. Cinders I still think you can get your 745 to work if you ground multiple pins.

My temps max out at 77*c on the 9300. Runs prime till the cows come home (and the cows stay up all night and most of the next day), and doesnt crash or act oddly while gaming. the 700m works splendedly at 2.0 of course, no overclocking or pin modding there unfortunately.

So now i have a 9300 running at 2.4 bsel0 and vid modded, and a 700m stock clocked at 2.0. It's a very nice combination.

For those of you like myself who like having a DTR and a ultraportable, on your desk at one time with a wireless keyboard and mouse, try some software called Synergy. Lets you control multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse. Kinda like a dual monitor setup but with two laptops connected over a wireless network. Very cool.

I took pictures of the 700m disassembly process but failed to take a picture of the damn pll. I want to overclock that thing so bad. The heatsink slug is made of copper! How cool is that?!

Because there are smart overclockers posting in this thread,
I would like to ask out of curiosity what is known about overclocking
Pentium M LV and ULV processors. This is off topic here, so if the
topic will be worthy, let us make a special thread on that.

I thought it is nice to have a silent light notebook with LV or ULV inside
which sometimes can be pushed to its limits when you need more computing power at the level of 2 GHz or so.

Hi Guys,

Well it was like Xmas day on Friday for me! My 2Gb of Crucial memory turned up and I also had a big overclocking day on Friday. I ordered 3 x 745's and 2 x 735's on Thursday, they all arrived on Friday....

After hours and hours of playing about I couldn't get any of the 745's to run stable, even with volt mods...

Still that's cool...

I whacked in a 735 and the first one ran @ 2.26 Prime stable at default voltage.

I ran Prime until Sunday with no problems, it sits at 30 degrees idle in desktop and max's out at 60 degrees which is spot on. I spent most of Sunday playing Half Life 2 & Counterstrike, again with no problems and as a final test decrypted and encoded a dvd with no problems.

I'm going to stick at 2.26Ghz as the temperatures are nice and it doesn't require any extra voltage. I'm going to live in Sydney, Australia in December for a year so I don't want the extra heat over there to push the CPU over it's limit.

My laptop is now maxed out and it'll do fine for me now, the only extra thing I'd get would be a faster hard disk when one comes out as that's the only real bottleneck now... then again an 6800 Ultra card would be nice along with an XPS battery and PSU.... ; )

Thanks to everyone for the ideas for the modification and all your help.

Cinders.

If I drop a Banias into a 915, will the pin mod work?

A Banana?... I don't think so mate, that's a fruit. You need a CPU to pin mod...
Banias is a different die all together from the Dothans. It might work but why would you want to? Going from a 1.6 GHz 2 MB cache Dothan to a 2.13 GHz 1 MB cache Banias (if it's even possible) would IMO still be a step back.

I vaguely remember reading earlier in this thread that the CPU had to have 2MB cache.. too lazy to search though
