Cheap Processor Upgrade? - Page 38

If you can get it under $160 shipped it's pretty good. $160 is the average BIN price on ebay. I've seen some end as low as $115 shipped, and as high as around $190 shipped. I wish I'd have jumped on the $115 or $120 deals. At the time I was skeptical about being able to get the 745 to work, as I hadn't heard about the voltage mod yet. Right now there's next to nothing on ebay as far as 745s, but keep watching and there'll be some deals again I'm sure. Especially as it gets closer to Yonah.

what's yonah...?

I'd go for the RAM first, you're gonna need that anyway and the extra RAM will allow you to play games pretty well right now. I got my 745 for $160, but I knew it was a good chip so I didnt mind paying for it. Yonah is the new dual core laptop processor coming out from intel. Nothing big, but it's the first of it's series.

Thanks for the advice! Transcend is good RAM, or, should I got w/ crucial or mushkin?

i went OCZ from newegg like 180 or something for 2gb's.

Its default timings are 4 - 4 - 4 8 but it runs at 4 - 4- 4 - 12

there was a thread about this k6 was a part of it. i tried many different timings but my memory bandwuth scores were always + or - 5% of default settings..

K6 had some irregularity with super pi. dont know if he kept testign or stopped.

What do mean by 4-4-4-12 timing? Im assuming higher = better...?
higher = worse

Transcend is great. Only reason to go Crucial would be higher stress testing standards (least likely to get a bad module), but it honestly isnt worth the price. The bottom line is that all the sticks will perform the same.

Bah, that thread is here somewhere, but I stopped because there is no difference between them. I even went down to 4-2-2-8 and 4-2-2-10, gained maybe 10MB/s in speed (3000->3010). The FSB of the Intel 915 board limits the RAM so much that there's no benefit. I really want to find out how to solder so I can get a good PLL on this mofo mobo

PLL? I'm lost...</wanders>

pll is the chip that is the clock generator for the Front Side Bus

Oh, ok, thanks!

to further elaborate, if he changed the pll to one that was not locked to 133mhz frequency he could then increase the ram and bus speed as well.. instead of relying on Pin Mods to increase the bus of a high multiplier 400mhz chip to 533mhz.

Classically increasing hte processor speed alone does not increase performance as much as increasing the memory speed in overall performance. We have lucked out a little with the dothan core due to it scaling upwards drastically with increases in speed.

But eventually there is a wall. id love to actually use NHC to LOWER my max multi and have a 10x multi, by 200mhz bus ( we run at 133 now) = 2.0ghz but with 1000mhz FSB speed. (we are at 533mhz) right now.

That would be such insane performance that I would probably cry

my thoughts are, u just brought up a 6 month old thread

u shouldve just posted in the extreme pinmodding guide..
