im looking at 15.4 widescreens, good for gaming, solid/reliable, quality screen.

There is a Toshiba specific forum here...

But, in my experience at least, Toshibas are pieces of shit. We have 10 Toshiba Satellite laptops at work... only 1 of the 10 hasn't had multiple minor problems or a major problem yet. Of the other 9, two have been replaced completely and one is in right now... but been in for service for 2 weeks and will probably be replaced.

Supposedly the Tecra series is better than Satellite tho.

Tecra series are hell much better than Satellite Series.

Tecra A4 is nice, except no DDR2. There is a nice Terca A4 review over by notebookreview.com

It seems like a good lappy, but it will be about 4 thousand dollars more than the Z71V for not really much of anything :-/

wow, i just saw the Z71V

z71v has higher resolution but no glossy screen
thats one of the reasons why im thinking about the tecra a4

'higher' resolution is an understatement though. I think the A4 has an absurdly low-res screen for being 15.4". If not for that it'd be pretty nice.

i would buy the z71v if the screen were nicer. you cant pass up that trubright from toshiba. also, i like the wxga over the swxga. does someone know of a notebook similar to these notebooks with a glossy screen? thanks

EDIT: does asus have any glossy screens?

Dont know many nbs with similar specs / gloss. After seeing glossy nb screens, I decided thats what I needed.

Here are some reasons some people wouldnt buy the A4 though:
Toshiba is bitches, Well they only put 4200 rpm hd's in the A4, for whatever reason, and wont let you upgrade to a 5400 rpm hd even. They also wont let you configure it with a 1.816ghz proc, for some random reason.

The notebook is pretty harsh on the battery, from what I gather, not that any gaming machine isnt going to be.

Its like, 7lbs iirc, which is 1/2 heavier than the z71v.

Toshiba build quality doesnt really seem to be anything to write home about from what I hear. Even if they arent pluaged with problems like the sattelite series, there is still likely weakness in the back of the lcd, which is pretty common of the toshibas that I have heard about.

If you can get by those things, it should be a pretty good notebook. If WXGA+ with Clearview (or whatever) is enough for you, seems like it might be a good nb.

The only thing that is close (that I can think of) with a glossy screen is the Asus W3v, which is only 14 in widescreen.
