Wireless G reading B from a G signal?

Hey guys was wondering if someone can help me out here. I just got a Lynsys network card for the wireless internet from work and it says it's reading it from a B router but when I asked the computer guys they say that the router is a G/B but shouldn't it read from the G signal? It says I'm connected at 11 and I thought G connects at 54? Sorry I'm just getting into this wireless stuff so if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it

Some G routers drop down to B rate (11Mbps) if there are any B devices connected to the network. I think that this problem has been ironed out a bit with the latest routers, but older ones can suffer from this. When the B device connects, it drags the whole wireless network speed down to B speeds. Maybe this is what is happening here?

Besides the routers capability to run in a mixed environment, distance is also a factor. Both will fallback to improve SNR.

Ok cool. Yeah this router is from work so maybe they haven't set it up right or something. Plus it might be an older router too. Thanks for the info guys
