so a minipci slot is a pcmcia slot? i keep gettin confused from other posts and sites where it makes it seem like its something totally internal as oposed to a slot where the card sticks out (i mean like for wi-fi cards) and my teachers says its the same thing too but im confused still

yeah, pcmcia is the laptop version of the desktop pci slot ,so some people maybe calling it a minipci slot.

A Minipci slot is a standard developed to bring small form factor PCI cards to laptops (it is not the PC card slot on the side of the laptop). I dont' know if the 8886 has one but the 5660 does I believe. It's just a small slot (simliar to a SODIMM slot) in the computer you can use to add cards that don't need an external interface.

I think minipci and pcmcia is a little different.. pcmcia generally refers to pcmcia cards anyway.. might be same connector not sure. but minipci is in a different location... I think pctorques review has a picture of the minipci connector in 1 of his teardown pics

I have'nt seen a pci minislot card before and it not mean a pc or pcmcia card. Try a search engine on a pci minislot. Don't mean any disrespect mdchaser, but I have'nt found anything to learn about a pci minislot from.

I take that back I did find a minipci card, cool, learned something new, so the 5660 has one, I thought internal space would be a problem and mdchaser might be refering to a type of slot on desktops. Thanks mdchaser.Anybody got some cool links for add ons.

Model 8886

"PC Card slots.....2 Type II or 1 Type III "

http://pctorque.com/comparenotebooks.html

Powernotebooks.com also lists comprehensive machine specs.

but by pc slots they mean pcmcia slots...
PCMCIA slots are the kind on the side of the 8886 and 5660... the 8886 has ports for two type I or II cards or one type III card. The 5660 has a slot for one type I or II card. Usually, you use PCMCIA slots to cards that have new ports on them (USB or firewire) or a modem or lan card or a wireless lan card. Mini-Pci is a slot on the bottom of laptops (if they have one) that holds usually an 802.11b wireless card and attaches it to an internal antenna. They are most definitely different, though.

So is the 8886 wifi compatible or does it come with wifi built in?
I read on eurocom's site and they list the future 16" lcd as having antenna built in. not sure if that's the same 16" screen that sager will have as option soon but probaly good chance it is..

Hey lost mortal, I've been looking at pctorque's tear down pics on the 5660 and 8886 and it does look like there's a slot by the 5660's cpu, if it's a mini pci I don't know for sure, with the 8886 pics I did'nt see any questionable slots but maybe someone will know for sure. Did'nt mean to lead you wrong with the mini pci, all the computer stuff I ever read never mentioned it before. That's what's nice about this forum, you can use it as a learning tool.
The Mini-PCI slot is under the keyboard next to the memory slots on both the 5660 and 8886.

As far as Eurocom, they have the antenna built in because they offer the option of a Mini-PCI wireless card and have been doing so on all of their 8880 series machines, including the 15.7" display. Sager does not offer this option.

Yes, they both have'm, and the discussion earlier about building an internal antenna for wifi was centered around getting a minipci card and putting an antenna inside the case.
