XP Restore CD

Thread Starter
I got my 9300 tonight and while playing I noticed (as some other people did) that after a while a start menu item called Dell Restore CD appears.

I remembered reading that this is only available once so thought I'd best post the shortcut for anyone who missed it!

C:\DELL\MEDIAEXE\ODM.EXE

Might help someone who messed up the first attempt or people whose link didn't appear.

Hey, I did burn a restore CD earlier this week, but I haven't really checked it out - is it just a copy of the Windows OS you purchased, or is it a restore CD for your system?

I've not done it yet but someone said it was a plain XP CD without extra cr@p that Dell install.

Is this particular disc bootable? The one that came with my XPS2 doesn't seem to be.

It's a bootable XP SP2 cd, that installs without asking for serial, and, indeed, has none of the Dell crap on it. I just reformated and repartitioned HD on my I9300 with it.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the file name. However MCE2005 doesn't have that program on it.

Nope. It came with the cardboard insert that says that you're able to burn your own CD, the Sonic burning software, Cyberlink DVD player, and the MS Office CD.

So, does it install all of the drivers too, or do you still need a driver disk?

I plan to make a backup Windows XP disk and format the hard drive. Is there an option to burn a driver's CD? How do you back them up?
What I have done in the past is visit Dell Downloads and enter my service tag. Then it shows you what hardware you have, and lists the drivers so you can download them. Make your own CD with all those drivers.

No program as far as I can tell. Even the folder mentioned above doesn't exist on my 9300. Best bet is just to call Dell and get them to send you a CD.

The instructions point you to a Start Menu option that is supposed to burn the operating system backup CD and then disappear (so you can't do it again). However, there are obvious problems because other events must make the menu option disappear before you ever get a chance to use it. It was gone on my new 9300 before I could do the burn, so I called and Dell is supposed to be sending me an WMCE CD.
