Ram Fan in 8890 - Page 2

heheh, well it's been through lots of airports and hotels with me. i'm thinking it's been bumped around a bit. everything is performing better than expected considering i was part of the "pre-order" crowd. The 8890 still handles any game or app i run on it.

i'm so sad that i can't use it until i can get a new fan. hopefully sager won't take too long to reply.

has anyone tried a different replacement fan or method? i'd be interested in hearing how it worked out.

thanks again

you might try one of the larger electronics parts suppliers. Those sorts of fans are fairly common. As long as it is 5V and fits the space.
I still would fire an email off to Sager they may have them.

Oh No

Well I guess it was bound to happen. I have always had lound fan noise on my 8890, and have suspected it was always coming from the two large fans by the heatsink (for CPU) and the ran fan, but with all the talk about this RAM fan, i decided to take the fan off and have a peak. well turns out the nosie I was getting was primarly from the two major fans, as now I got a new nosie that is definitly coming from the ram fan...looks like I gotta really fix it now...haha...oh well...ps where is the cheapest place to get AS5? anyone? also can you make the large fans silent???

cheers

The large fans are relatively quiet, certainly relative to the resonance between the RAM fan and mobo. You will find that once you fix the resonance problem all the fans are much quieter.

You should be able to pick up a tube of AS for under $10.

You might want to search around on google/froogle. I obtained my tube of AC5 for $6.17 USD, SHIPPED, though I unfortunately cannot remember from what site I ordered it. Just look around a bit.

Noise Fix

Did the RAM fan fix you mentioned Steve and it made a huge difference on the noise. I used the polyethylene wrapping that came with the new PS2. The high pitched sound coming form the fan is gone, I can actually hear my hard drive now, which brings me to another question. My hard drive is loud (80 gig 4200, other one is fine), is that a sign that it may be getting worn out? I have a 160GB external for back up so I am not to concerned, but it would be good to know. Also my keyboard seems a little loose now that I have been taking it on and off so many times. Any quick fixes for that (i read your review but did not see anythin)

Cheers

Good to (not) hear it worked well
The 7k60 (from your sig) should be whisper quiet (well almost).
Noise can indicate a problem or off balance drive platter.
Hard to tell without actually hearing it in person.

The best way to fix the keyboard is to get a few sheets of folded Aluminium foil (yeah the stuff you cook things in). I folded over about 3 times cut out the space for the keyboard connector cable then put it under the keyboard. Make sure the small clips near the F2 and NUMLOCK keys really do click back in place. The reason I used foil was it transmits heat. I figured I didn't want to use an insulator as the heat spreader needs to do its job to cool the memory chips.

Alcan it is!

Thanks for the tip. I put some foil down and it seems to have worked out well.
