Undervolting?

I was cruising around the dell forums and saw a post on undervolting the cpu to lower the temp. The post is : http://notebookforums.com/showthread...t=undervolting I don't see anyone mentioning undervolting for 8790's

Can this be done on a desktop processor like in the 8790? Has anyone done this to lower their temp in their lappy?

This can be just as bad as overclocking your CPU. Certain processes require specific voltages in order to function correctly especially on a Deskptop CPU, more than a Centrino or mobile cpu. You can drop your bus speed, but that also can give you problems if your cache isn't happy. There are variables and yes you can tweak them but you probably won't be happy with loss of performance or the BSOD you get. Your bios has controls for the cpu which are safe to use, but that actually will cut your cpu perfance to about 1/3. Yes I am rambling on about this. I suggest not to do it.

Well how come my fnireds dell laptop is undervolted and temps have decreased by over 20C!!!! and fans hardly or never turn on and had 30+min if battery life all with the same prefromance!!! And is very very stable becuase it is kool!

Undervolting will produce cooler temps and be stable. Performance won't be the same, it will be lower. He may be pushing the bus speeds and overclocking while undervolting. Basically he evened it out so basically if he gained something it was a number not performance. He will gain battery since he cut the voltage. You have to remember he is using a Dell not a Sager, two different animals. One has a mobile cpu and one has a Desktop Cpu. undervolt your Sager and watch what happens. It has a min voltage in order to perform correctly, that would be the battery settings. If you own a desktop take it and undervolt it and watch what it does at the lower voltages.
