Nvidia vs ATI (current mobile chips)

Thread Starter
Just came across an article comparing the performance between the ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 and the NVIDIA GeForce4 440. I thought some of you might be interested so here it is:
Compaq Presario 2810T vs. Toshiba Satellite 1900-703:
(benchmarks are at the bottom of the page)

64 vs 32 meg? That doesn't seem fair...

Yes, they mentioned that...

Well, this is a Pearl Harbor for NVIDIA! The graphics subsystem in Compaq Presario 2810T has 64MB of graphics memory against 32MB in Toshiba's notebook, but…The only game that doesn't definitely show the advantage of ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 is Unreal Tournament 2003. However, let's recall the splash screen before the game with the NVIDIA's logo. It's all right if the game is well optimized for one of the most popular graphics chips, but there are not very many games like that. And if it's optimized for ATI?
And I do think NVIDIA has 64 meg video card out somewhere, I saw it advertised in a compusa ad saying some toshiba with DVD+R had a 64 meg nvidia card. I'll try to find, but I'll still be all ATI.

I think they have a 64 meg card as well, I was only saying it's a little unfair to test it in this manner...

Nvidia does have a 64meg card, the geforce4 460 go, and it performs similarly to the M9, but it also sucks more power than the M9 does.

actually the geforce 440 go and geforce 460 both come in 64MB. The 460 is just a slightly higher clocked version.
That's true, but if I remember correctly (and it is a definite possibility that I am not remembering correctly :-)), the 440 has a max of 32 onboard and to get 64, they add 32 more right off the chip. ATI does this with the 7500 if I'm not mistaken... So the sager that has the M7 with 64 megs has this setup. It doesn't make a difference with performance... just size.

Ok here's from the spec sheet:

......................on chip........Max Memory
460 go...........external...........64MB
440 go...........external...........64MB
440 go 64MB...64MB..............64MB
420 go...........external...........32MB
420 go 32MB...32MB..............32MB
410 go 16MB...16MB..............16MB

Eh, those charts are always weird. It does say that the 460 has it externally... But it doesn't specify how much is external and how much is on chip, etc. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong? Thanks for the info!
