I loaded it and damn near everything works ! I have yet to try modem and hibernation has issues but even function keys (volume, internet) WORK ! If you are a noob or lazy give it a try. I'm happy on my stock M6811.

What about the 64 bit version???? We have 64 bit laptops, why saddle them with a 32 bit OS?

64 bit

Hi well I've run 64 bit kanotix and kbuntu , Liked them both but being a noob I couldn't get chroot to work. Also some features not able to work out of the box.
Until I figure it out I'll use linspire or pclinuxos and dabble withthe two above.

I´ve been using Kanotix 64 bit (I think you were the user who pointed me to it), and very happy with it, but I would still be interested to hear if the modem works in Linspire 5.0. Not that I use it much, but it is nice to know that everything works! Also, there is not yet a 64 bit version of the flashplayer plugin yet. So sometimes I debate going back to 32 bit.

Hi Oak ,
Did you get the ati drivers up ? (They have a script) I have yet to try the modem but am just charging the batt. right now so I'll post if any luck .In there wiki they talk of chroot to have 32bit compatiblity but I didn't get it working . Turbolinux 10 64 promises it but I had x issuses with it and can't figure it out . Have you tried the 32-bit kanotix ? I see they just released a new version but the old version wasn't working for me . Hopefully I'lll have linspire info by tomorrow .

I *had* everything working including accelerated graphics (ATI drivers) from the install-kernel-sources-vanilla.sh script followed by the install-radeon-debian.sh. But I hosed my system fooling around with changing the grub graphics and had to re-install (yesterday), but one of the files that the kernel sources script looks for cannot be downloaded. I think the server (http://www.polbox.com) for that file is temporarily down (it keeps timing out). So, since my reinstall, I have not gotten the radeon drivers re-installed. Kanotix 2005-2 is around the corner and does not require the kernel sources to install radeon drivers, so I am waiting for either polbox.com to come back up, or the 2005-2 64 bit version of Kanotix to come out. In the mean time, I have everything except the radeon drivers working.

Something very important when running those radeon install scripts is to completely close your display manger first.

1. Log out of session,
2. use ctrl > alt > F2 to get to a non-graphical console, and
3. use /etc/init.d/kdm stop to end display manager

Prior to this problem, Kanotix was great. I should have left well enough alone, but I like tinkering

: ) I feel your pain many times over , I think 2005-2 should be great . I have been keeping an eye on their ftp . I've read Libranet 3.0 rocks but have to buy it ! In Five-0 it see the modem but I could not get a dial tone . I will keep trying but it's still Kanotix for 64 bit . The 32 bit scene is getting very competative : ) !
Oh btw did you get the multimedia keys and hibernate to work in 64 ? If so excellent . I may have to quad boot (Xp , Xp-64 for my damn gaming addiction) , Five-0 , Kanotix-64 not in that order of couse !

beaviskob1: Does the 56 k modem work in Linspire? How do you like it after a couple weeks? How stable does it seem?

Also http://www.polbox.com is back up, so I now have my radeon drivers installed. The kanotix scripts do everything for you. Much easier than when I tried them in Suse.

theoak : I haven't tried much on the modem . Linspire does see it and kpp comunicates but when I try to dial out I get no dial tone . It may be a simple fix . As far as stability it has ran fine , but if not careful with apt-get and synaptic it will break . I got cnr because it simply adds programs without breaking . Some of the native games (ut , shogo) are giving me install errors . I am a newbie so it's still a learning proccess .
