Can I mix 512mb OEM ram with 1gb Cruical ram in my XPS-2?

I just ordered the xps-gen2 laptop with just 512mb memory and plan to upgrade at a later time.
Can I mix the OEM 512mb with a 1gb stick in the open slot? I would buy the 1gb stick from Crucial.com and it would be compatible with the xps-2

Or do both sticks have to be the same size?

Thanks in advance

It will work just fine, your System Supports upto 2 GB

Sure you can. It just wont run in dual channel mode unless the sticks are identical size. Benchmarks here and other places like Tomshardware have proven that the Dual Channel performance benefit is less than 4%.

Hope this helps.

It will work, but just not dual-channel.

OEM is not a brand. Dell probably uses Samsung modules for their RAM.
