I had no OS pre-installed either...So I just popped in the XP cd and voila! It was a smooth installation...didn't have to do anything else to make sure the OS finds the sata-HD. Hopefully it will be the same for you. To be honest I don't know if windows have the SATA-dirvers on-board, but I guess it must since it recognized my drive. Hope this helps.

this problem is the only one keeping me from buying one right now. does anyone know if this prob can be fixed by rewriting the bios?

wait a lil and get the new sata 100gig 7200rpm

Well there have been some BIOS updates. If those would fix the problem that would be an answer to prayer...
Oh and whitewind I wonder how legit that netbux thing is... (http://www.netbuxscam.com/) just something I came across.

I'm no expert on this, but perhaps getting a SATA drive would be the best thing since they are starting to come out...but that being said i think there are others here who don't have a SATA drive and do not see any performance hit...while some do. I'm just glad I didn't take a risk and find this out the hard way.

Someone mentioned getting a DVD in SATA, now how the heck could you do that?

Yeah, why is that Windows detect 2 IDE channels, while according to Intel there should only be one. Hmmm.

I think it is windows problem. THe BIOS only see one IDE channel, which correspond to sonoma chipset design.

So, it is more of a Sonoma problem rather Z71V problem in my opinion hehehe

Yeah did a little poking around and read a few documents and the BIOS. Sonoma only has 1 IDE channel. So if you have the DVD and HD on the same IDE channel (primary and slave).

I think intel want everyone to take advantage of SATA, but provide one IDE channel for backward compatibily with some devices still on IDE.

So yes, it is similar to the desktop. If you have the DVD/CD on the same IDE connection channel as the HD, it will hamper your system performance. Time to look into an SATA drive.
